Tantalizing Clues About Nicotine
August 4, 1998
Many studies have shown that nicotine improves cognition. That's a big reason why smokers smoke--they say it helps them think, reason, and concentrate.
Several epidemiological surveys show that, as bad for health as it is, smoking reduces risk of Alzheimer's disease, according to James Pauly, of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Kentucky.
Several autopsy studies have shown that compared with cognitively normal people, those with Alzheimer's disease have fewer nicotine receptors in their brain tissue.
Currently, many researchers around the world are trying to create a nicotine-based drug to prevent and treat Alzheimer's. Others are trying to figure out why Alzheimer's destroys nicotine receptors in the brain. So far, they have not gotten very far, but at the University of Koln in Germany, researchers have discovered a correlation between degradation of nicotine receptors and tau protein, which has also been linked to Alzheimer's risk.
