Thinking of Relocating to Cary

by laeaton

My family is thinking of relocating to Cary, NC. We know little about the area and would like some info. if possible. We are looking for a home in the 150-200K range and want to know what we'll get for that. What are the better areas or neighborhoods. Also schools are very important to us. WE currently live in New York State where the education is quite high and we'd like to know how Cary schools would compare. Any thoughts??

Cary is an acronym that means: Contained Area for Relocated Yankees
(you'll fit right in!) it's a quiet area close enough to raliegh for work & "city" amenities in a nice little suburban setting. You should have no trouble finding a place (1800 - 2000 sq. ft.) in that price range.

Thanks for the info. We plan on visiting next month. Is there anything specific that we should plan to do??

I'm from New York and moved to Cary in 1997 - you'll love it here! The schools in Wake County are wonderful and, for the most part, will provide your kids with a great education. As in all areas, there are a few schools that are better than others but overall I think you'll be pleased. My parents were both involved in education so it has been a key area for us (my family) as we've moved to different areas of the US too. Which part of NY are you from?

If you'd like some housing information I can email you some listings based on your requirements (I happen to be a Realtor). Let me know a bit more about what you're looking for (# of bedrooms, square footage, etc) or anything that's important to you. You can email me at kdennis@fmrealty.com with your info if you'd like.

Travel Tips for Chapel Hill

The city of Chapel Hill

by acemj

You won't have much reason to visit Chapel Hill outside of visiting the campus of UNC, but here's a little bit of information about the city itself.
It's located mostly in Orange County, North Carolina, but also a little in Durham County. It was founded in 1819 (after the school) and the population is just over 51,000. If you drive around the area close to campus, you'll see a lot of lovely, expensive homes. The public buses are free if you need a ride.

Greeting people with "hey"

by pamelacmiller

Here it is a local custom to greet people you meet by saying "Hey". Then following that is " How are you today?" and maybe a little something about the weather. Here - we talk to each other. That means in the store, at the gas station, in the restaurant, at the grocery store and any person you may meet. We say "hey" - not 'Hi" or "Hello". We are slower here than up north - so if you come here from - say - NYC - you better be ready to slow down. Its just the way things are! Also - people all go to church on Sunday and dress up. If you go out on Sunday - you will see people in Sunday clothes. Also - Wed. are big church days - actually - evenings and esp. in Durham people get off early to attend church on Wed. evening.

Celebrity Dairy

by hobanny

Celebrity Dairy is a local goat farm along with a beautiful B&B. In addition to goats, there are ducks, chickens, pigs and turkeys on the farm. Oh, and peacocks. Banish any thoughts of hokey, dirty farms. This is a lovely, classy place to stay AND a sustainable agriculture farm. There are also miles of hiking trails adjacent to the farm.

The B&B is formed from two buildings - one from the 1800s and another modern. Ask Brit about the fireplace in the dining room! Rooms range about a hundred dollars a night.

I had some friends coming from London and they stayed there for three nights and loved it! We visit often for Sunday dinner, and are having our wedding there.

On the third Sunday of the month, there's a fabulous 5 course meal prepared by local chefs. Most of the ingredients are locally grown or produced.

A Night in Chapel Hill, As Far As I Can Recall

by sambarnett

I really wasn't. It ended up in my pocket... here's what I can recall...

July 2002, in town for a wedding. Started drinking early on the morning of the blessed event, not to insulate or isolate myself from the day; indeed, I had a feeling the day ahead could never occur in a state of sobriety.

At the reception no one saw me fall off the fence railing, but yeah, I was wasted. Andy Griffith made his professional debut here. Managed to stagger to a room in the rather expensive Chapel Hill Inn where I was not a guest. A few hours later flying khaki awoke me.

   "Dude, I found your pants."

Where did they go and what were they doing while I slept? I wondered. Nevermind, the night was beginning.

"Who's with me?" I asked, zipping my fly up. My friends looked paler than usual. No need to drag them to an even lower level of being, I must go it alone.

I made my way to Franklin Street, with vague promises of people I barely knew saying they would be in places I wasn't sure even existed. They did and the people were there but I didn't know any of them. A cute round-faced, huge-breasted sweetheart gave me occasional light pats on the arm. "Wow! Yer like Jack Kerouac. Honey, you gotta meet this guy, he's just like Jack Kerouac."

Her boyfriend, "Bear," gave the appearance of friendliness between warning glares. I wasn't here to cause trouble. A UNC U.S. History grad student and I discussed labor movements; I signed off with a, "Power to the People!"

The next bar resembled a dungeon. Feeling jovial, I bought a round. The discussion from the last bar continued, this time I signed off with a, "Workers of the World, Unite!"

My new friend helped me find the Chapel Hill Inn. We wished each other well and parted, me fully expecting to go straight to sleep.

Then I met Audrey, who said she was looking for a postcard...
