Minor League Hockey

The Charlotte Checkers play at Cricket Arena (pictured here). An evening at a Checkers game is a great and affordable way to entertain a family. Most of the crowd is made up of young people all enjoying the game, hoping for a brawl on the ice and generally having a great time. Tickets are cheap and the action is fast and furious.
Great Blues
by acemj about The Double Door
The Double Door is the place to go for good blues in Charlotte. Some great acts, including Eric Clapton, have performed at this little dive, but you're more likely to find some local talent and an unpretentious, relaxed (though sometimes loud) atmosphere.
It's been around since 1973. Come as you are.
Mediterranean-style
by FreeCloud about Blue Restaurant and Bar
Brand new restaurant, very friendly and knowledgeable stuff, pleasant atmosphere. Interesting menu, the food was artistically presented.
The owner also owns the Panini next door which serves light/casual fare such as pizza and sandwiches. All on the menu are very interesting.
I had:
Lunch Appetizers $9.95
-Galette de Crabe et Hommard: France $9.95
"Creamy Provence-style lobster and crab
cakes finished with basil oil and a citrus
beurre blanc. "
- Salad Halina (do not seem to be on the menu now)
Dinner:
Appetizer:
-Flavors of the Mediterranean $5.95
" Tapenade, Baba Ghanoush, white bean and parmesan salad and traditional hummus served with a warm pita, Greek olives, roasted peppers and olive oil"
Entree:
- Duo of Hudson Valley Duck $22.95
"Seared duck breast and crispy confit leg with butternut squashpuree, yellow and green haricot, pomegranate seed aigre dolce and a frisee black truffle salad."
Excellent food, well designed and prepared, artistically displayed, taste wonderfully. Occasionally the butter-based sauce could be a bit too rich to some people.
Popular Brewpub (a little too popular)
by acemj about Southend Brewery
Southend is always a popular spot located on South Blvd. in an area of Charlotte also known as the Southend. It's in the shadow of the Uptown skyscraper's and it's full of yuppies and the after work crowd of white collar bankers. I don't really go here for the food, although everything is pretty good. They have all your typical burgers, sandwiches and some other beer inspired dishes, but most people come here for the drinks and the social scene.
Try the Pork Tenderloin with Charleston grits if you want a southern style meal.
Professional sports teams...
by acemj
Professional sports teams often hold their respective cities hostage by threatening to move if the city does not build new arenas or stadiums. Charlotte is no different. The pro basketball team, the Hornets are trying to get a new arena built in Uptown.
Personally, I think that would be great, but I'm not willing to finance a private organizations building project with public money. Besides, I'm an LA Lakers fan!!
**UPDATE: 5/15/02 The Charlotte Hornets are officially moving to New Orleans. The city was unwilling to meet the demands of the team's ownership. I have no problem with getting rid of them, but if the city tries to get another team to replace them it will make us look pretty bad. Let's say next year the city makes attempts to attract a new team. Well, the only way to do it will be to build a new arena. If we build a new arena to attract a new team, people will say, 'why didn't you just build it for the Hornets?' Good point.
Charlotte is also home to the NFL franchise, the Carolina Panthers.
