Charlotte Knights
by acemj
Charlotte's AAA baseball team is called the Knights. Technically, they play just across the border in South Carolina, but Knights Castle (their ballpark) is only 20 minutes south of downtown Charlotte on I-77. The Knights provide a great family atmosphere are tickets are very reasonably priced.
Irish Pub
by acemj about Connoly's on 5th
Connoly's is right around the corner from RiRa's, Charlotte's original Irish Pub. The guy who started Connoly's actually was brought over from Ireland and given a job at RiRa's. Now he's the main competition for his former employer having opened his own pub on the very same block!
Great place to meet a young Uptown crowd.
VT member frankcanfly and I had a drink here the other night and had a great time. Here's a shot of Hillary, my favorite Connoly's bartender! Come as you are.
Sandwiches Aren't Just For Lunch Anymore
by etfromnc about Bear Rock Cafe
I am told that this is a growing chain of franchises but I have only ever seen two locations, both were in Charlotte, and one of those is closed. Nevertheless, this location, in the heart of one of Charlotte's fastest growing areas, has pretty good food and excellent service. The format is counter service but when they are not too busy, they will bring your selection to your table. Unfortunately for them, I have never seen them "too busy." The food is very tasty but the portions tend toward the smallish.
They offer daily specials such as senior discounts on a certain days and government employee discounts on another day. Blackened Mahi Mahi sandwich. Thankfully this delightfully delicate fish is not as blackened as much as it might be in New Orleans but it was delicious. It is served as an open face sandwich on a toasted potato roll with roasted seasonal vegetables on the fish. There was also a Cajun remoulade sauce which could have been just a bit more outspoken.
Hidden, but worth finding
by acemj about Red Rocks
Red Rocks is close to my house, so I stop by every now and then, but it's not the most popular place in town. Maybe that's because it's a little hidden and hard to find. It's in a mall that is hard to see from the road that passes by and a lot of locals don't even know it's there. But for those of us who are aware of it, we enjoy the food and the atmosphere. Everything is solid and the prices are reasonable. The desserts are especially good. I like the chocolate caramel fudge torte.
Nathanael Greene
by b1bob
...but it took one of my distant kinfolks to get it back for the "good guys". Nathanael Greene married Nancy Terry (my grandfather Nathaniel Green Terry was a descendant of Nancy Terry- for whom my mama was named). Nathanael Greene and Nancy Terry Greene lived on a piece of land between South Boston and Halifax, Virginia which is today a public golf course known as Greene's Folly. Enlarge the photo and read the sign.
