Travel Tips for Charlotte

Hometown pride: Carolina Panthers 2003 season

by b1bob

Being a town lacking deep roots and full of come-heres, one would not expect much cohesiveness around a hometown sporting team. As I allude to in the sports tip, the Carolina Panthers American football team was bloody awful at the 2001 season. They had a middling transitional 2002 season with a new coach and some new players. In the 2003 season, they not only made postseason play, the earned the right to go to the Super Bowl. In January, 2004, some fans went to the extreme to show their support at a Panthers rallye at the famous Charlotte intersection of Trade and Tryon. For full disclosure, the Carolina Panthers are my team. In fact, I went to the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey to watch the last regular season Panthers game against the New York Giants, having the audacity to wear my Panthers sweatshirt and to cheer at the top of my lungs (in the midst of a bunch of Giants fans) to cheer on my team.

That's more like it

by b1bob about Midwood Corners

Midwood Corners is a strip mall not too far from where Mark lives. Mark bought a book on photography (which he strongly suggested I read closely) at Book Buyer's Used Books (a $30 value, I'm guessing) for $5. Hey, as long as it's used, but not abused. Given its location, you will leave with a lot more green in your wallet than you will from Southpark.

Interesting but, again, expensive!

by tatyanap about Bravo! Ristorante

This restaurant is advertised as "Italian cuisine served by professional singing servers." You will see pictures in the hotel elevator showing servers dressed in Italian costumes and singing at the individual tables.

In reality, servers perform several numbers throughout the night, accompanied by a pianist. It's nice but may or may not be worth your time and money. We liked it and the food was great even though expensive. I had Crostini (freshly baked Italian bread topped with tomato concasse', prosciutto and fresh basil) -- there are four slices, very good.

Next, I ordered Carolina's Seafood Cioppino -- morsels of seafood served in a saffron flavored broth; it was good as well.

For dessert, my friend and I ordered two desserts and shared: Triple Chocolate Torte (three layers of dense chocolate genoise filled with white and dark chocolate mousse, the finished with ganache) and Napoleon (crisp layers of pastry and creme patisserie, flavored with Amaretto and granny smith apples). Napoleon was my favorite -- it was delicious!

Light Rail Family Breakfast

by etfromnc about Light Rail Family Restaurant

To my knowledge, this is the first business in Charlotte renamed to reflect its proximity to one of the two most controversial public works projects in the history of Charlotte, our increasingly infamous and still not completed South Corridor Lightrail System. You should not go to this restaurant looking for sumptuous fare nor romantic atmosphere but the breakfasts are good and ample in quantity. Breakfast is the only meal that I have eaten there (which I do frequently) but I also hear good reports on their non-breakfast offerings.
On occasion the waitresses act like they could have used just a bit more rest but just overlook that and enjoy the food. If eating breakfast, get the biscuits rather than the toast, unless you just hate biscuits. And for any British readers, I am not talking about what we call cookies which you call biscuits. For any who may not know, our biscuits are more like your scones but still distinctively different.

Charlotte Speedway

by phil_uk_net

Of course, the big event each year is the NASCAR race, where all the good ole' boys come out to watch their heroes make left hand turns all day.
Apart from that though, there are other events that go on throughout the year.
On one of my working assignments in Charlotte (1992 or 1994) I went along to a motorshow where cars were on display for show and sale. The photo shows a collection of American spec E-Type Jags.
