Rare, but possible

Well, in late February of 2004, Charlotte had the worst blizzard that I've ever seen down here. In fact, it was the second most snowfall in the history of the city with about 15 inches falling in my backyard.
Not surprisingly, the city shut down. I even got my car stuck in my driveway trying to drive to the store to get some groceries.

If you don't want to drive the hour and a half to Asheville, but you still want a taste of the beauty of the North Carolina mountains, just drive the 35 minutes to Crowder's Mountain National Park on the west side of Gastonia (Take I-85 or Hwy. 74 West).
The trails are lovely and the views at the top are worth the hike.
Like Champagne Brunch?
by bdbrewer about Charly's Restaurant
Ambience was high ceiling and a little industrial looking. We were in town for Barbara's high school reunion. These people were either students or spouses of students from the party the night before. Most had eggs benedict. Nobody complained. The mimosas were great (champagne and orange juice)

The comeback kid . . .
by acemj about Knife & Fork
The original Knife & Fork opened in the 1960s, but sadly it closed a few years back. Bummer for me. I remember going here at 2 or 3 in the morning because it was the only place that was open still serving a greasy burger. The strictly "diner" style menu changed a bit when it reopened in 2003 under the ownership and direction of a New Yorker (gasp!), who goes by the name, "Otto" Graham. The interior was redone and now it looks like a cleaned up diner at best; a new place trying to look old, at worst. They added some slightly more high brow items on the menu and now serve alcohol, but all in all, the food is still good. My first "revisit" to the new Knife & Fork was with fellow VTer b1bob in March of 2004. I figured this would be his kind of place and as it turns out, he enjoyed his meal. I've heard that the place still serves unbelievable mac and cheese, but I can confirm with certainty that the corn chowder is awesome. Still, I can't decided if the reincarnation is better or worse than the good, old, greasy spoon that once was . . .
