Travel Tips for Charlotte

Banking capital of the South

by b1bob

Sorry, Atlanta, Charlotte edged y'all out as the banking capital of the South. As I alluded to in the intro, only New York is a larger banking centre than Charlotte in the USA. Wachovia and Bank of America are headquartered here and many more have a presence.

North-side shopping

by acemj about Concord Mills

Concord Mills is located just a few miles northeast of Charlotte off of 1-85. There are over 200 stores in this retail wonderland as well as a number of fun restaurants. It's a cross between an outlet mall and a regular mall, so you're likely to find some great bargains right next to a ripoff.

However, the sad thing to me is that this is the number one tourist destination in all of the Carolinas! There are a number of contributing factors to that statistic, including the fact that the mall is so close to Lowe's Motor Speedway, which brings in tons of visitors for the races, but still!! It's just a mall!

Where's the spoon?

by b1bob about Knife & Fork

As Mark would say, this is a b1bob kind of place. It is a diner located a stone's throw from Mark's house. We ate here late one Saturday night after an edifying and full day in Columbia, South Carolina. One would think that after taking lunch at Maurice's Barbecue, that neither he nor I would be hungry. He wasn't so much, but round about 9pm, I was starting to get my appetite back. Because of the difference in appetites, the Knife & Fork was the best option. The service was professional, but not overly warm. In the waitress' defence, it was a full house even at that hour. The ambience was no-frills, just what you would expect for a diner. I ordered a gyro and fries; Mark had corn chowder, sauteed zucchini and onion. Mark heartily recommends the corn chowder as fresh corn is used and is garnished with a biscuit floating therein. My gyro and fries were great, except most gyros I've ever had before were served with feta cheese. For further details on what Knife & Fork has to offer click on the menu.

Mediterranean Rim

by acemj about Rick's Mediterranean

I love the foods of Spain, France, Italy and Greece and Rick's has all of the above. The atmsophere is cozy with a small dining area and a smaller patio outside and the waitstaff is knowledgeable and welcoming. I'm on their email list, so every now and then I get a message letting me know that they're having a belly dancer or some live flamenco music on a Saturday night. I can't remember what they called it, but last time I was there I had a mouth-watering sea bass dish. Their desserts are as good as they are eclectic and they also have a well constructed, complementary wine list.

Uptown Architecture

by acemj

Charlotte's skyline is impressive. This is the Bank of America Tower, which is the highest building in the city at 61 storeys.

I also used to work for Bank of America, so I've spent some time in this building. On the very top is the Corporate Dining Room. Only Senior Executives can make reservations there so it's not open to the public. I've been twice by "special invitation" and it's awesome. Great food and what a view!
