Quiet Spots
by acemj
If you know where to look, you can easily escape the crowds in Charlotte. Whether you're on the busy streets of Uptown or in a thriving South Charlotte shopping mall, you can always find a little peace in a tucked away corner. This photo was taken at the pond that's directly behind the Arboretum Shopping Center in South Charlotte, one of the busiest and nicest strip malls in the city. A lot of locals don't even know it's there, but if you look for it, you'll be rewarded with a small trail and most likely some quiet time with just you and the birds. The Arboretum is located at the intersection of Highway 51 (Pineville-Matthews Road) and Providence Road in South Charlotte.

Okay, not really off the beaten path, but the British Barber Shop is down the road in Matthews, NC (near Mario's) and its where I've been getting my haircut for over 9 years.
It's owned by the Little family who are originally from London, but now reside in the area. That's Mike and Trish in the photo!
Watch out for Mike. If he gets to know you like he knows me, he'll start to abuse you. He usually squirts me with his water bottle at least once every time I visit. Definitely a prankster!
Beef eater's paradise
by acemj about Sullivan's Steakhouse
Sullivan's is one of many great steakhouses you'll find in Charlotte. The atmosphere is neat, but not overly formal and the location on the edge of the trendy Southend and the Bohemian Dilworth neighborhoods is a plus. A nice, juicy porterhouse and a glass of cabernet sauvignon is always nice.
They're also known for the Kansas City Strip and the onion rings.
Can you get good food at a Post Office?
by etfromnc about Dish
You certainly can!
When I was growing up, 1220 Thomas Avenue was home to a United States Post Office. There have been renovations but essentially the same building now houses a very nice, but flashy and loud family restaurant. The building has been painted a bright yellow with scattered veggies adding to the indoor and outdoor decor. The loudness is more from the music than the customers and seems to be consistently inconsistent. The food is, however, very good, although relatively plain and simple. Chicken and dumplings is one of my favorite dishes when it is properly prepared but, excluding the ones prepared by my grandmother, I have eaten more bad ones than good ones. Way tooooo often, the dumplings are too greasey, too slick, undercooked, too soupy, or you need a microscope to find the chicken. Dish did not equal the ones my grandmother made but she is in heaven now so I suppose that I will have to keep them in mind when I want good chicken and dumplings. Although I love sweet potatoes and am well pleased that they are showing up more frequently on menus in recent days, they will not be my choice of a vegetable next time. They were much too stringy. The biscuit which was served with my meal was also delicious but was a bit superfluous with the dumplings.
A local institution
by acemj about Landmark Diner
The Landmark is somewhat of a local institution in Charlotte. For a diner style joint, the food is good and in typical diner fashion the hours are accommodating. They stay open 24 hours on the weekends and until 3 am during the week. The interior is what you would expect; a breakfast style bar, booths and plenty of tables. The booths are all equipped with mini jukeboxes and the waitresses are usually old and very Southern. What's not to love? Breakfast has always been my meal of choice, but the desserts here are what really has made the place famous. The pies are scrumptious and all on display in the glass case near the cash register at the front.
