Vinnies is a popular local hangout in which you can meet people and eat some raw oysters on the half shell over a cold beer. This place is always busy, so if you like a social scene, this is a great place to start an evening. Come as you are.
Mert's is becoming a Charlotte institution. It is already the best Southern restaurant Uptown. It appears to be more expensive than one might expect for this cuisine. The wait staff is very friendly. As I thanked my waitress on leaving Mert's she said, "Come back, hun!" However, it is because of its location. For one thing, the uptown location means higher rents and higher prices must be charged in order to pay the rent. However, the folks who work in the nearby bank buildings are used to paying high prices for the food. Even with the location factored in, Mert's is still more reasonable than the average Uptown restaurant. In fact, it is possible to get by on a good meal for less than $10 (not counting tip). The type of food served here is Southern comfort food. My family and I have eaten this all our lives. As an appetiser, they served tender and sweet cornbread. Some cornbread I've had is so tough you could build a house with it, but this is great. I had the fried chicken served together with pinto beans and collard greens. The one thing that surprised me was that they adorned the collard greens with onions and tomatoes. I guess they have to kick them up a notch with all the folks from up North migrating to there. Mark had the shrimp and grits with focaccia bread. I love most international cuisines, but every once in awhile, it's good to get back to basics, even on holiday. It was refreshing to see a restaurant serving such Southern comfort food in the shadow of the modern skyscrapers of Uptown Charlotte and amidst the high-dollar restaurants. Mert's Heart & Soul captured my heart and soul, which earns it an A.
This is an excellent example of a restaurant phenomenon which must have been very common in Charlotte in the last half of the 20th Century. Families (predominately Greek) would open a restaurant and when it met with significant success, they would open one or more others, creating a small chain. As these local chains grew and the children in the family reached their adult years, the chains were dispersed among them. The result was actual dissolution of the chain but at least three of the founding families still has enough solidarity that the menues, decor, etc. continue to be almost identical. Only a few months there were three Tryon House Restaurants in the Charlotte area but one of the sons sold his about six weeks ago and now there are two. The one that closed was my favorite, only partially because it was closest to my home in Matthews.
"I was a Flight Attendant for Mesa Airlines out of Charlotte, and when me and my fellow FAs got there, we lived at the Holiday Inn Woodlawn. At LEAST 5 times a week we ate at Tryon House. The food was excellent, the service was awesome, the place was ALWAYS brimming with people. For the low prices, the quantity of food was HUGE. I'd recommend this to anyone. GREAT restaurant."-- A review from CitySearch I am not normally prone to make an entire meal of a salad but these restaurants have some very good salads which are often adequate as an entire meal. My favorite item on the menu, however, is their meatball sub, and I am not normally an avid fan of big overstuffed subs. Their meatball sub, however, seems to have just the right combination of seasonings, sauce, meat, and bread.
If you want to learn about the history of the area, this is the place to go. There are 4 permanent exhibit halls which take you from the 18th century beginnings of the city through modern times. Upstairs you'll find the temporary exhibits. All of the multimedia presentations are offered in both Spanish and English. There is also a research library and reading room upstairs, which is one of the warmest, most perfect places to research in the city. You'll also visit the Hezekiah Alexander house located 500 feet behind the museum, the oldest home in Mecklenburg County. Alexander was a signer of the Declaration of Independence among many other things that I can't remember! Here's a picture of the fountain in front of the museum.
