Travel Tips for Charlotte

Ice Skating Rink @ Eastland Mall

by b1bob

I have never seen an ice skating rink in a mall and would never expect to see one this far south. Eastland Mall, in Charlotte, on a fairly warm (78-degree Fahrenheit, 25 Celsius) spring day, the rink was full. A good pair of ice skates and pride which is not easily wounded.

by DrewV about Oakhurst Pub

My personal favorite spot was Oakhurst Pub, a rancid little biker bar on Monroe that had one of the best Open Mic nights I've seen. I played there often, and met the members of Mumbling AlvinQ, my third band, there. The bikers are really cool about local musicians hanging around. And the Newcastle Broonale flows like water.

BARBECUE (or just, 'Q')!!!!

Bubba's Barbecue or
Bill Spoon's Barbecue. There are plenty of barbecue joints in town, but these two always get good recommendations.
If Charlotte is known for anything when it comes to cuisine, it's barbecue. There are two kinds that you'll find. There's the Western North Carolina style, which is more tomato-based. And then there's the more famous locally, Eastern style, which is a vinegar-based concoction.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the stuff, but if you're visiting and you want to do as the locals do, then you've got to try some Q! Eastern NC-style barbecue (pulled pork).

by etfromnc about Taco Bell

For the life of me, I cannot understand why this chain is not more popular. Perhaps it is because people really do not want to "think outside of the bun" when they are thinking fast food. It is probably true that no fast food restaurant should be high on our list of favorite places to eat but it seems to me that Taco Bell should be among the healthier fast food places. From Huntersville to Pineville, they are also among the cleanest and they seem to have the most cordial staff. I have eaten at every one in Mecklenburg county at least once and have never found them to be less than beautifully clean. The only time that I have received less than outstanding service was on a Saturday afternoon when a manager let part of his day shift off early because it was a slow day and then got slammed before his evening shift arrived. A bad call? Doubtless! Common? Not at all! Fiesta Taco Salad. I have to have meat at least once a day but I am trying to eat more vegetables. This $3.79 salad has lettuce, tomatoes, and beans plus an invariably crisp taco shell and of course their ground beef. And with their sauces, you can make it as bland or spicey hot as you want it to be.
Personally, I also appreciate that they serve Pepsi products as I prefer those to Coke products.
On the "Satisfaction" rating below, I have never had a "Great Experience" at a fast food restaurant.

Rafting, kayaking, biking, climbing, etc.

The U.S. National Whitewater Center is an outdoor recreation facility set on the banks of the Catawba River, just west of Charlotte, which features all of the activities listed above and more. The center consists of 307 acres of woodlands and is home to the world's largest recirculating river, 14 miles of biking, hiking and running trails, two seperate Zip rides, a rather elaborate eco caching array, and one of the world's largest outdoor climbing facilities. This outdoor adventure recreation center operates on a buy one ticket, PLAY ALL DAY plan, or you can buy tickets for individual Zip rides, climbing sessions, or all day limited to only one sport. Admission prices range from $10 for an individual Mega Zip flight to $49 for an all day, all sport pass. All sport season passes go for $139.
Originally conceived as a training center for the US Olympic whitewater athletes for the 2008 Olympics, it has had financial and legal issues which have still not been resolved but are not problematic for facility users. It is one of the most remarkable man-made outdoor athletic facilities that I have ever seen.
