hotel near convention center
by traveltime08
Want to visit Charlote, N.C. for an event at the convention center Aug 14-15. Looking for an inexpensive hotel with parking within reasonable walking/driving distance or along the trolly route. Don't want to stay in the Hilton- won't be in the room that much. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance-

Google Maps and/or Google Earth is great for this.
On the map, go to the convention center (501 S College St).
Now, go the tab that says 'find business'.
Type in "hotel"
The database will show you hotels from closest to farthest from the center point address (the convention center). It will display address, phone number, web page, etc. for the hotels. Now you have hotels and can investigate them more detailed.
You can then have Google automatically give you directions to/from your hotel to the convention center.
Travel Tips for Charlotte
Modern architecture
by acemj
Charlotte's skyline is not as sweeping as those of Chicago or Hong Kong or Singapore, but it's certainly the most impressive in North Carolina. The Queen City is the second leading banking city in the United States behind only New York and most of the skyscrapers that you see are owned by the major banks. This picture is a bit outdated (I took it in 2001) and there is at least one additional skyscraper that has been added to the skyline since it was taken.
Concord
by b1bob
Concord, North Carolina is a suburb of Charlotte just across the Cabarrus County line. It is famous for two things: the Lowes Motor Speedway and Concord Mills Mall. People who visit only concentrate on those things, but there is a perfectly good downtown area with notable architecture (exemplified by the old courthouse). There are no chains to be found, but there is the Cabarrus Creamery.
Amtrak
by acemj
The Amtrak station is located on North Tryon just north of Uptown Charlotte and is another option for those who are coming from out of town. We Americans don't use the trains as much as in Europe. The trains are not always as efficient and the routes are certainly not abundant, but the ride is usually comfortable and safe and slightly cheaper than renting a car. I took this photo at the Charlotte station while waiting for fellow VTer b1bob who visited me from Richmond in March of 2003. His train was delayed and the trip took about eight hours. I can drive the same distance in about four!
Some like it hot
by acemj about Woodlands South Indian
Since Indian food is among my favorites, I've searched out all of the local Indian eateries and none is too exceptional. However, Woodlands is the best of the bunch. The restaurant specializes in South Indian fare and does it fairly well. The menu is completely vegetarian. Be warned, however, Indian food can be fairly spicy! Masala Dosia (like a big Indian pancake with a spiced sauce), iddly (cream of wheat is steamed I think? and dipped in either a spiced sambaar or a minty coconut chutney), chana masala. They even have one North Indian specialty, Aloo Gobi.
Good breakfast
by acemj about The Original Pancake House
Well I doubt that this is actually THE original, but it's a good pancake house nevertheless. It's in a nice part of town and is frequented by mostly a yuppie crowd. The menu is full of many varieties of pancake, crepes, waffles, grits, cereals, eggs and the like. You won't go away hungry for sure. I usually get a Belgian Waffle or a stack of pancakes.
