The Queen's City: the city's nickname.

Shawlet: How natives pronounce that fine city.

The Square: the official centre of the city at Trade and Tryon.

cookout: backyard barbecue.

skew: How natives pronounce "school".

U.N.C.C.: University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In terms of sports, referred to simply as Charlotte.

Sun Drop: a citrus flavoured local soft drink.

Cheerwine: a cherry flavoured local soft drink.

hose pop: most call it a garden hose.

Char-Meck: The combined jurisdiction of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

Charlotte Disturber: What many locals call the primary newspaper The Charlotte Observer.

Saigon Square

by b1bob about Saigon Square

Saigon Square is a Vietnamese-dominated shopping centre on Central Avenue in the Asian section of suburban Charlotte. There is a tailor shop, a video store, 2 restaurants, a jeweler, a jewelry repair shop, an alcoholic beverage store and a school where they teach you how to accentuate women's fingernails.

When the moon hits the sky, like a big pizza pie!

by acemj about Mario's

There are a lot of infiltrators that have migrated down from neighborhoods in the North where pizza is sold by the slice so thin it's best eaten folded in half lengthwise.
For them, and for anyone else who wants great NYC-style pie, this is the place to go.
Sicilian style is good too.
That's my friend CJ tossing the pie!
There are two locations in Matthews. Pizza, definitely the pizza!

Fish Tacos!!!

by acemj about Cabo Fish Taco

I developed a love for fish tacos when I lived in San Diego and until a couple years ago, I had to fly to California to get a taste. However, Cabo Fish Taco came to my rescue when the owners (a couple young surfers named Rob and Barry from Virginia Beach) decided to open up this joint in NoDa (North Davidson Arts District). Fish Tacos and a Tecate (Mexican beer) to wash it down. The chips and salsa are also good (and free with your meal).

Mecklenburg Lakes

by etfromnc

The county in which Charlotte and Matthews are located is called Mecklenburg after the home of Queen Charlotte in Germany, for whom our largest city is named. Mecklenburg appears to be landlocked on a map but the county is actually bordered by three beautiful lakes which give you ample access to all sorts of water activities from just enjoying the beauty to waterskiing, boating, fishing, et al. I have even seen a guy trying to surf but obviously he did not have much luck.
The most prominent, and newest, is Lake Norman, but Lake Wylie and Mountain Island Lake are equally beautiful in their own special ways. Mountain Island Lake is perhaps the least accessible and thus least crowded. It is also the smallest with a total surface area of almost 2800 acres and 27 miles of shoreline. It was formed in 1924 when our first hydroelectric plant was built and thus is also the oldest of our three lakes. It is a part of the Catawba River watershed system and the primary source of drinking water for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Water stays in Mountain Island Lake for about 11 days before flowing into Lake Wylie.
