Three Days in Charlotte - What to see, restaurants

by Geeedavey

I'm going to be in Charlotte for three days in April. Any recommendations as to what to see, where to eat would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Charlotte has many good restaurants, even only in Uptown: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/18aef/c94c9/2/

VT member acemj has a great Charlotte page: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/15b39/c94c9/

Have a good time.

Travel Tips for Charlotte

Grassy Area #6 - Sound Effects

by bdbrewer

As you wondered about this grassy area, you would encounter sounds that 'followed' you. In this case a frog. It would follow you the length of the rock wall croaking. This 'frog' water fountain is located by the wall with the travelling sound. In other instances, you would be 'followed' by the sound of a babbling brook. Very disconcerting the first time you encountered it.

North Carolina Zoo

by acemj

The Zoo is located in Asheboro only a little over an hour from Charlotte off of I-85 North. It's one of the larger zoos in the country and you'll find a great open range containing many native African animals, like the lowland gorilla in the photo.

Aqua Vina

by etfromnc about Aquavina (They spell it both ways.)

Center city Charlotte is exploding with new restaurants and, as seems to be typical with restaurants, almost as many close as open. The bad part of this is that many which do not make it are pretty good. This new offering is a bit out of the way and I do not think that you will come upon it by accident. Although it has a Tryon Street address, it is actually between Tryon and College streets and faces an open greenspace. The lighting is rather low and there is a lot of leather and dark wood so it could be a very romantic setting but the night that I was there, there was only one other party present and he was trying so loudly to impress his guests that he was an outstanding investment manager that he really detracted from my meal.
Unfortunately (for me), I arrived only half an hour brfore closing and some of the staff seemed to be ready to leave then. Having spent 17 years in the hospitality industry, one of my pet peeves is restaurants and shops which want to close before their posted hours. As you may guess from my comments on the food, it was much better than the service, and my overall rating is diminished by the attitude of the wait staff and the fact that they seated me only one table from the loudmouth although we were the only customers in the place. I cannot call it a favorite dish because it is the only one that I have had there but the house special the night I visited was Beef Tournedos and they were excellent. They were cooked to perfection and seasoned equally well. Of course, they would have won my approval anyway because they were served with asparagus spears and presented on a bed of scrumptious potatoes. The potatoes were roasted and then partially mashed and seasoned beautifully as well.

Check out the bar

by acemj about Bijoux

Bijoux (means "jewel" in French) claims to have the longest authentic zinc bar in the world. While I can't confirm this claim, I can confirm that the food is good and not as expensive as you might think. You can eat lunch here for less than $12. The outdoor patio is a great place to hang out and watch people go by on a weekend evening. Even though, it's a French restaurant with Le Cordon Bleu trained chefs, it's not a pretentious atmosphere.

Tuscan-American

by acemj about Guytano's

I hesitate to classify this place as Italian because it's really very eclectic. The owner/chef, Guytano Ciccone has a flair for presentation and inspects each plate before it leaves the kitchen. I was here recently (August 2003) with VTer steph4867. We have a habit of eating well whenever we see each other and this night was no exception.
The interior is cool, with a night sky ceiling complete with stars and clouds. There is a fountain and gas lamps and a dim, cozy lighting to complement hand painted murals on the walls. Stephanie and I both started with a glass of Antinori Santa Cristina Sangiovese (2001) and some delicious bread with a slightly sweet butter spread. She had the Herb-Crusted Chicken Sautéed for the main course and I had the Jumbo Lump Crabcakes Sautéed. My crabcakes were great, one served in a mustard-based sauce, the other in a peppery tomato sauce. Stephanie's chicken was also great served in an especially smooth gargonzola cream sauce. For dessert we shared a Cinnamon and Vanilla Bean Gelato which was awesome!
