Unlike many southern cities,...
by acemj
Unlike many southern cities, Charlotte is more focused on the future than stuck in the past. This picture shows the old (a historic cemetery) and the new (the skyscrapers behind it), but in the eleven years that I lived in Charlotte, the local buzz was always centered on what's happening now and what's going to happen in the future.
Small grocery store, fresh stuff!
by acemj about The Fresh Market
The Fresh Market is a Greensboro, NC-based chain of upscale, but not too expensive, grocery stores. The atmosphere is warm with wooden accents and a small, easily navigable store. The meats, fruits, and vegetables are among the freshest in town and the variety of cheeses, breads and desserts is also impressive. Only slightly more than Harris Teeter, the city's most popular grocery chain.
For the friendliest service in Charlotte...
by b1bob about Landmark Restaurant-Diner
The Landmark is a well-established diner in Charlotte- in business since the late 1980s. The only knock I have against the atmosphere of the Landmark is that they do not appear to segregate smokers from non-smokers. Occasional tendrils of cigarette smoke from neighbouring booths wafted into our area. Having said that, our service was phenomenal. Lynn, our waitress, is a 50-something lady who looks and sounds like the character Thelma Harper on Mama's Family. She was very attentive and just had a native Charlottean accent and a general friendly way which neither Mark or I could accurately describe. I had a Greek omelet which consisted of tomatoes, feta cheese and onions. Mark's breakfast that Sunday morning consisted of pancakes and fresh fruit.
Sonoma: Seasonal, elegant, American cuisine
by etfromnc about Sonoma
Sonoma's dinner menu blends "a Slow Food philosophy, which focuses on local, organic, peak-season ingredients, with true culinary artistry." Menus change with the seasons. They feature ground Kobe beef, including an outstanding bacon-topped Kobe beef sliders with a side of pommes frites appetizer for $9 which seems to compromise their self-labeling as an "American cuisine" restaurant but it is good, regardless of its ethnicity. Main courses are built around such as venison, duck breast, Atlantic salmon, sea scallops, and more Kobe beef and feature the freshest fruits and vegetables in Old MacDonald's inventory.
Sonoma offers complimentary valet parking. The Kobe beef sliders with pommes frites (in an "american cuisine" restaurant?) is a very tasty, and relatively light, dinner, especially if you want a nice atmosphere but need to eat a bit more quickly than your more traditional upscale dinner.
NASCAR Silicon Motorspeeway
by Bostephenson
This is like most racing games, only a lot more realistic. You actually get in a car and three connected TV screens show you the track. The tracks are simulations of the real tracks, and because Concord Mills is directly across I-85 from Lowe's Motorspeedway, you can race a track you've just seen. They are identical.
