Travel Tips for Charlotte
Creative Loafing
by acemj
If you want to check out the latest happenings in Charlotte, pick up the FREE weekly publication Creative Loafing at practically any restaurant or newsstand (they're found in bins usually near the front door). It leans a bit to the left, but it usually has good restaurant reviews (just in case this page doesn't give you enough choices) and has some interesting live music reviews. The movie reviews, however, usually suck!!
Great place to browse
by acemj about Paper Skyscraper
This store on East Blvd. is right next to a Thai restaurant and is full of cool and mostly impractical things. It's the kind of store that you can spend a half hour to an hour browsing and then decide that it's really not worth paying THAT much for a really cool scented candle. So how do they stay in business you ask? Well, they're located on East Blvd. in an upscale area where people have everything they need and shop for the strangest things. Cool books, stationery, photo albums, office supplies, furniture, etc. Too much, but if you shop here, you don't care!
More Steaks!
by acemj about The Capital Grille
One of the best dining experiences in Charlotte. The atmosphere is very masculine with oak paneling and an elegant bar. The service is top-notch and the quality of the steaks is exceptional. The Capital Grille is part of the exclusive national chain based out of Washington, D.C. Filet Mignon and the Capital Strawberries and Cream with Port wine sauce for dessert.
Sullivan's
by etfromnc about Sullivan's Steakhouse
I have only eaten there once but the food was excellent. The biggest problems were the parking and the noise. The parking situation particularly antagonized me because the valet parking attendants blocked vacant parking spots with traffic cones so that they effectively monopolized the up close parking. The restaurant itself and the interior staff were excellent, perhaps better than that.
The noise level was a bit high. This does not seem to be the place where you want to go for a quiet, intimate dinner, but then isn't everything in the South End loud except perhaps for McIntosh's.
Reservations are highly recommended and an absolute necessity on weekends. The French onion soup was excellent with near perfect taste, consistency, and temperature. The croutons were too soggy but that is difficult to avoid.
The wine was at the appropriate temperature but the serving size of the by-the-glass wines was a bit small.
Why would anyone go to a steakhouse and order fish? Because I love salmon and eat it nearly every time that I see it on a menu.
The Salmon Imperial was delightfully prepared although the Imperial sauce was a bit sparse on crab meat. The first bite was almost too heavy on the horseradish but the second, when I got into the area where I had sprinkled lemon juice was absolutely delicious.
As you look at any other restaurant tips that I may have you will see that I am not overly generous in my praise but had I not been put off by the parking attendants and the noise level, this would have been an ideal meal.
Thompson Park and St. Mary's Chapel
by MandaJ320
Thompson park is located on East 3rd Street in downtown Charlotte, and is home to St. Mary's Chapel. (I was married at this chapel!) St. Mary's Chapel is open to the public each Friday from noon till four, so that's the best time to visit the park. The chapel has been around since 1892, and was originally built for Thompson's Orphanage. Now it is a historic site. The chapel is worth seeing, and the park is beautiful.
