Travel Tips for Charlotte
Charlotte Knights
by b1bob
The Charlotte Knights are a triple A rated farm team for the major league team the Cleveland Indians. Knights Stadium is a little ways south of Uptown Charlotte in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Unlike major league baseball and NFL football, the Knights cater more to families than to swells who only care about being seen. The Charlotte Knights are reminiscent of the "Alabama" song called "Cheap Seats". Mark and I thought we would have to be content with a distant shot of the stadium, but we found a back way inn and climbed up a flight of rickety wooden steps underneath the scoreboard and got a choice shot. Was it illegal? Technically yes. However, the worst thing that could have been done was to scurry us off without this closeup photo. Perhaps you might want to bring a good catcher's mit for errant foul balls which make the stands.
Thomas Street
by mjmarble about Thomas Street
Voted best Neighborhood bar in Charlotte. Just a great comfy place to hang out, play pool/ping pong/fusball, or just meet some friends for drinks. One friend discribes it as an 'old warm sweater which just keeps you spending money' - although its not expensive. Just about anything. One of the few bars in Charlotte where you could see someone in a tie sitting a table away from someone who probably has never worn a tie in their life.
The owner is also the chef
by acemj about Ethan's of Elizabeth
This self-proclaimed "American Bistro" is more like an infusion of tastes from all over the place. Owner/chef Mark Martin (not the Nascar driver) is originally from Charlotte, but he went to culinary school in New England and also lived in New Mexico. The restaurant is located in a beautifully restored home in the Elizabeth neighborhood and seats about 80 people. Red Chili herb marinated pork loin.
You'll pay between $6-9 for starters and between $12-20 for the main course.
Sushi if you must
by etfromnc about Sushi Fun
The following is the blurb for Sushi Fun on the ShoppeCharlotte.com website and it may be more accurate than they intended for it to be.
"This place really hits the spot when your starving... Fresh fish, authentic Japanese & Chinese cuisine... Cold, Cold Beer!! 704-504-1888 12806 Suite 220 York Road, Charlotte, (past Carowinds)"
I cannot imagine returning to this restaurant. It was very clean, the staff was cordial and efficient, and the service was prompt but the food was disappointing. I never try sushi nor sashimi the first time I visit a Japanese restaurant so I cannot comment on that but I did have beef and broccoli and was a bit disappointed. The broccoli was the highlight of the meal and it was genuinely delicious but the beef, the brown sauce, and the accompanying fried rice were a disappointment. The spring roll was okay but nothing to write home about.
The beef was way too long in the MSG. Excuse me if this is overly graphic but I felt almost as if I were not the first person to have eaten it. I did not like this beef for the same reason that I like mushroom sauce but not mushrooms themselves, I do not like to bite down on anything and feel as if it is trying to avoid my bite. The fried rice would have been pretty good as an entree by itself but pork fried rice with an definite pork taste does not go with slimey beef and broccoli. The brown sauce was more gelatinous than saucey and the components of the sauce separated so severely that when I tried to warm the leftovers the next day, the grease melted the styrofoam before the meat was even warm. The broccoli of the beef and broccoli.
City Hall
by b1bob
Charlotte is not normally known for its pre-modern structures, but the city hall building is one of the older ones. In the square is a statue honouring its veterans of World War I. Contrasting this comparatively old building is the ultra modern skyline in the background.
