Rose Buddy City on the Pasquotank River
by grandmaR
Elizabeth City is a wonderful little town on the Pasquotank River in the Albemarle Sound area. They are friendly to boaters going up and down the ICW through the Dismal Swamp Canal. They have a wine and cheese party every night there are at least 5 new boats at the dock. The friendly people and the good unpretentious food.
I used to love the milkshakes made from real ice cream at Stalks. This is one of the only places that we got off the boat and eat breakfast in town. Unfortunately things change, and Stalks is now a dress shop. Mr. Comstalk sold his restaurant because he couldn't find someone to take it over.
MM 43.5 Anchorage on the Pasquotank
by grandmaR
If you don't get to Deep Creek Lock for the first locking of the day, and you don't stop at the Visitor's Center, or if you go through the 3:30 locking at South Mills, unless you have a very speedy boat, you are not going to get to Elizabeth City before dark - especially in the fall/winter. It's not recommended to run the Pasquotank in the dark. A lot of people therefore want to find a place to anchor before nightfall. One place that people often anchor is Goat Island at mm 43.5. The southwestern leg of the river that goes behind Goat Island (Green #13) can be a good anchorage for boats that draw less than 5 feet and for up to 45 feet in length. Depths are 6-7 feet.
MM 51.1 Pelican Marina
by grandmaR
We have never stayed at this marina. Apparently Hurricane Isabel damaged the docks and fuel tanks, and while the docks have been repaired, there will not be fuel dispensed at this marina any longer. The closest facility with fuel to Elizabeth City is now across Albemarle Sound. It is across the river from Elizabeth City which makes it a bit isolated. They advertise

ICW Rose Buddies of Elizabeth City

"Elizabeth City on the Pasquotank"
Elizabeth City is the home of the Rose Buddies. The Rose Buddies welcome boats who have come south through the Dismal Swamp Canal or going north from Albemarle Sound, and if there are at least 4-5 boats, they have a little wine and cheese party for them about 5 pm. The goal of these little parties is for the cruisers (so often isolated on their own boats) to get to know one another.
"Leaving Elizabeth City"
Looking back at the free docks. There is no electricity, although you can get water if you have a long enough hose. They let us use the bathroom in the nearby mall. If you want to go to the grocery store on the road out of town, someone will usually give you a ride.
