Each year my family rents a house from Sun Realty on the Outer Banks. Like I said in previous tips, we've never stayed up in Nags Head/Kill Devil Hills because it's so much more touristy and with that, comes more of an expense. We always stay down in the Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo and sometimes Avon area. Going through Sun Realty has always been a great experience--the houses are well maintained, large enough for us (we don't think a HUGE elaborate house is necessary since we are hardly ever there) and the prices are always great. You can get a house for 6 people, oceanside, for the week for like $800. That's not bad at all divided that many ways and we usually have at least 4 extra people along too.
It's nice to have your own house--if we aren't camping, I prefer that to a hotel. Everyone down there is friendly because they all want to be away from the main tourist attractions. At night, we have fires on the beach, little parties and watch the lightning off the coast.
We have stayed at the KOA "Kampground" twice and I like it very much. You have your choice of cabin, tent or RV hookup. We usually stay in the cabins if we are going to be there for an extended period of time or if it's rainy.
They have a nice pool, good showers and bathrooms, cafe, helpful people, little store, gated entry...very nice. Also, direct beach access which is a very short walk--literally in their backyard
