Big Creek Campground GSMNP: Camping in the Smokey Mountains

I recommennd this campground if you have a tent because it is small (next to getting a backcountry permit, its as quiet as you can get). It is located next to a scenic stream, and large RVs and other units are not allowed. Only 12 sites are available. Reservatons are not accepted for these sites, but can be made for group camping. If this is full, the nearby Cosby campground should have an opening. Camping in the park is primitive by design. Ten campgrounds operate in the entire park. Besides sites nestled in the woods and along rivers, all campgrounds provide cold running water and flush toilets. No hook-ups are available in the Park. Cut and paste this link into your browser: [http://www.great.smoky.mountains.national-park.com/camping.htm#camp] for a useful website listing the campgrounds, number of sites and locations throughout the park.

The most outstanding feature is the proximity to whitewater rafting, fly fishing and a great hike to a swimming hole (Midnight hole) a rock house, and Mouse Creek Falls. See my travelogue for additional photos. The price is about $12 per night per campsite. A maximum of 6 persons is allowed at each site. This is a seasonal campsite. The National Park website below has downloadable maps of the park, trail maps, and of the campsite. Read the bear regulations when you plan your trip for proper food storage.

Fairfield Inn & Suites: Boone, NC

A nice comfortable room and a good breakfastbuffet in the morning.
Shopping mall was nearby, with some major shops like wallmart, but also some (small) restaurants.

Comfort Suites, Boone NC: Feel at home in Boone

Boone is named for the famous american frontiersman Daniel Boone.
It is located in the Apalachian Mountains, at 3000 ft high.
We were travelling the Blue Ridge Parkway and stopped for the night in Boone, which is only 7 miles from the parkway.
The lobby of the Comfort Suites, with its fireplace, makes you feel at home immediately .
We had a room with a whirlpool and on the groundfloor of the hotel was a large indoor pool. It really was comfortable staying here....

Complimentary Continental Breakfast was huge with lots of choices, even small hamburgers.....

White Egret Bed and Breakfast: White Egret

Very reasonable, beautiful accommodations! Each room has a theme and is tastefully decorated with homey quilts, comfortable beds, couches, etc. A nice touch was the upstairs kitchenette, complete with microwave and full-size refrigerator where you could cook up snacks. Felt very much like home (but more nicely decorated!). The next night, I stayed at a Hampton Inn on my drive home -- spent the same amount of money as at the White Egret and didn't feel half as comfortable!

Location is on a busy road, but it quiets down in the evening and is a good location to get to the beach, the Wright Memorial, etc.

Great Jacuzzi's in each room! Joanne, the innkeeper, knows just how much contact to have with the guests. I've been in some B&B's where the hosts just didn't know the boundaries (it felt like work when you just wanted to relax and be with yourself!), but she was really good at assessing your mood and how much conversation to get into with you.

I love VT!!!!
This house can cost between $1300.00 and $5000.00 per week (cost depends on time of season).
Best Months...June to September
Best Deal $$.....September
Pay for the linen package, it is a pain to pack sheets and towels. If you go with others, work out the cost, food preperations, and who brings what way before you go. Feeding 12 to 20 people, (beach-hungry) people, is NO JOKE.

Corolla Classic Vacations: Rental vacation house

Because there were eleven of us in our group, it was much more economical to rent a large house. There are many rental agencies located in the Outerbanks. We used Corolla Classic Vacations. Wonderful people to deal with. For three days each person paid $110. The house had everything, even DVD's. We did however have to provide our own food, towels, soap, shampoo, etc.

The house had a basement with recreation room, Fooseball table, stereo, air hockey table, and laundry room. A private fenced in pool plus jacuzzi. Grill, volleyball/badminton court.

Cottage in Kill Devil Hills: Cottage

We rented the cottage for a week in the summers of 1981 through 1984.

At the time we rented it, it had no cable TV, so the reception was poor. Therefore, we had to make do for a week without the telly.

The Melrose Inn: The Melrose Inn

A lovely double room with ensuite (usually a claw foot tub!) is about $65. The honeymoon suite with lounge and jacuzzi tub is about $125. Very reasonable. Home-cooked hot breakfast included.

A lodge from the turn of the last century, the inn is a winding rolling series of hallways and charming rooms with a comfy at-home feel. Rooms are individually decorated with antiques and many have claw-foot tubs. Service is relaxed and often do-it-yourself. Watch a movie in the lounge, have a cig or cigar in Lincoln's smoking den (with aits own small sun porch), or take in the atmosphere in the grand entrance hall. The porch is wide, full of comfy chairs/rockers, and looks past the enormous tuliptree to the arts center across the street. Hike up Melrose Mt. for a great view, or stroll a block to the town's main street.
Especially nifty--if Fido's along, don't despair--they have one room dedicated to travellers with pets.
