big cottage on the beach: b1bob's ideal accommodations tip

This picture was snapped a little ways past Avalon Pier. I describe this only to compare and contrast it to the modest accommodation we stayed in during the '80s. In addition to its location right on the beach, it was a lot more roomy and I'll bet you supper at Pigman's that they had cable TV here. When you stay at one of these places, roll up all the area rugs and stow them in a closet or under a bed so you won't need to worry about carpet stains. Lay a towel just inside the main entrance to catch any dirt that's tracked in.

Cottage rental: Home away from home in the early '80s

In the early '80s, we rented a cottage from a colleague of Daddy's. That was right nice: the typical plan for each day was to eat breakfast, hit the beaches in the morning to early afternoon, eat lunch and relax listening to WOBR (the local station in Wanchese), some 8-track cassettes, and go out to eat and/or shop. The only drawback was there was no cable hookup. Because of its location, TV signals were bad even from Norfolk. We didn't need it much, but it would have been nice to catch The A-Team on getting back from our evening activities. This place would work better now. There are no programmes on the telly that I would really miss. If there were an internet hookup and iTunes, that would be all I would need.

Unique Quality: There were two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, and a loo with a shower. The cottage was on stilts 8 feet (2.5 m.) above the ground to guard against storm surge. (I only hope this cottage survived Hurricane Isabel in 2003.) We parked the car underneath and there was a shower in which we washed off all the excess sand on coming back from the beach. There was nothing like coming back from the beach, having a spot of lunch, and taking a nap before doing whatever we were going to do that evening. It cost ±$250 per week. Factoring that out by the day, that would be $35 per night. That is cheaper than staying at a hotel in peak season anywhere near the beach.
