what's the best way to get there?

by cheryljacot

I will be in charlotte for a convention and then want to visit my aunt in Morehead City...what would be the best way to get there, or the best route via flying?

The closest airport with regularly scheduled passenger service is Carolina Coastal Regional Airport near New Bern (EWN). From there, you'll either have to rent a car or arrange taxi/shuttle service to Morehead.

Travel Tips for Morehead City

Port City

by grandmaR

Morehead City and Beaufort are the Twin Cities of North Carolina. Traditionally, Morehead City is the power boat side and Beaufort is the sail boat side.

Beaufort inlet is an all-weather inlet and Morehead City is one of two NC ports (I think the other one is Wilmington on the Cape Fear River). You can see a little of the inlet on the Beaufort side on my Beaufort pages.

When we transit the ICW, we have to cross the turning basin of Morehead City. (Where the big ships turn around - not a place you want to be if that is happening - I've never witnessed it, but the phrase "squashed like a bug" comes to mind.)

Morehead City is also near Camp LeJeune and Cherry Point Air Base (both US Marine bases). When you travel south from Morehead City on the ICW you sometimes have to stop while they conduct live ammunition exercises at Camp LeJeune. We've always sailed past Morehead City, but we have now driven through it in the car. The last couple of times we went through the turning basin, it was full of fishing boats from a fishing tournament.

I have read about it (I read the guidebooks out loud to Bob as we go by). It was named after John Motley Morehead, governor of North Carolina from 1841 to 1845. He envisioned "a great commercial city" where Shepherd's Point intersected with the Newport River and Beaufort Inlet.

Now in addition to being a port, Morehead City is a fishing town, and there is some wreck diving.

Fishing Tournaments

by grandmaR

Fishing is a big business in Morehead City. In addition to various kinds of fishing charters there are many tournaments in the area.

This one may have been the Friendly City Speckled Trout Tournament (which is actually out of Swansboro), or the Toys for Tots King Mackerel Tournament which are both at the beginning of November. Other tournaments are

New Years day - NC Saltwater Fishing Tournament

May 30 CCSA Cobia Tournament
June 7-14 Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament
July 19-26 CCSA King Mackerel Tournament
August 1-2 Annual Ducks Unlimited Billfish Tag and Release Tournament
October 24-26 Coral Bay Open

MM 204.7 Portside Marina

by grandmaR

This marina is a very prominant building after you go under the fixed Morehead City bridge. We have not stayed there

According to the guidebook from 2002, rates are $1.25/ft with a 25% Boat US discount at floating docks with greater than 8' approach and dockside depth. They are within walking distance of restaurants. Dry stack and out-of water storage are available at Portside Marina, located between the North Carolina State Port and the Morehead City waterfront. Gasoline, diesel, 15 slips and repair services are offered. Boaters will also find showers, laundry services, cable television hook-ups and 30/50/100-amp power

70 West Marina

by grandmaR

I have not stayed here, but we passed it by car in the spring of 2005. It is on Pellitier Creek and offers dry storage for 350 boats. They are also a dealer for the sale and repair of Mercury, Volvo and Yamaha outboards. Judging from that, it seems like it would not be an appropriate marina for a sailboat.
