We stayed here as a last resort for the MS Bike Tour in September 2007. From the point of arrival, the hotel was less than impressive. The staff was friendly, but not necessarily helpful. We arrived at our room, which was very old and outdated. The pool has green and black water in it, looks like a science fair experiment, and is completely locked up and off limits. That was really disappointing to our kids since the online description said that this accomodation has a "pool".
Since we came in for the bike tour, we didn't stay in our room much on Friday night. We especially didn't want to hang around much since the entire place REEKS of smoke. We went out to dinner then came in at night just to get a night's sleep. However, the next morning, we were shocked to find there was no water in the shower or sink for our room. The staff hurriedly found us the only other room available in the place, which was handicapped access. Since we were running late after having to change rooms, we quickly moved all our suitcases (the staff did not offer any help with this), showered and went to our biking event. We checked out of the room late Saturday due to a heavy rain storm.
The kicker was about a month after returning home to Raleigh, I got a letter and a bill from this "hotel" that apparently we stole a clock from the room and they charged us $50.00 Considering the rush we were in after they changed our rooms, we didnt' even remember to check that 2nd room to make sure it had everything it was supposed to. So I guess there was no clock in there, and they decided to charge us for their housekeeping error. Even after calling Days Inn corporate, we were told that they don't handle matters for their local facilities.
This was by far THE WORST hotel experience we've ever had. Normally we are a Marriott family, and if they had a property in New Bern, we would gladly have stayed there instead. Do yourself a favor, save the hassle and stay ANYWHERE except his 3rd rate "hotel" (and I use that term very loosely). I will now NEVER stay at a Days Inn again. It is definitely no surprise to me though that this place lost its Days Inn franchise designation.
If you are in town for the bike tour, you are better off to stay in Havelock or Kinston and drive in.
Unique Quality: Smells dank and smoky. Pool is a swamp and is locked up. Hotel is old, needs renovation. Water doesn't work in many rooms. Staff and housekeeping not helpful.
The Days Inn in New Bern has lost it's franchise, it's now the Days Hotel and the accomodations are inferior. Please correct that information on your listings. The Comfort Suites and the Sheraton are both terrific, we've had many guests who can attest to that.
