not a church goer

by movin2nc

Im a single Jewish MOM with 2 little girls.. I am a professional and I am looking to get out of the south florida area.. Have my sights set on Cary or Apex nort carolina. My concern is the amount of other Jews in the area and the southern way of life. Will my children be shunned? Will we not belong?
Any suggestions on where we choose to live?

thanks in advance for any advice!

Although it's in the "south", I think you'll find the RDU (Raleigh-Durham) area, which includes Cary, pretty tolerant and diverse. A lot of that has to do with the 3 major universities (Duke, UNC, and NCST) and the influx of workers in the Research Triangle Park area between Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh. As for questions about the Jewish community there, I'd start by calling these folks:

Travel Tips for Raleigh

I don't think there is any...

by Tarbadger

I don't think there is any must see or must do place or activity in the Triangle, and visitors have said as much to me. My advice would be to visit the college campuses at UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke. Take a walk through Duke Gardens in Durham on a weekend afternoon, go to a Durham Bulls baseball game, see the Civil War exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of history and take your kids to the new North Carolina Museum of Science in Raleigh. Perhaps see the capital grounds and eat lunch at the NC farmer's market. My fondest memory is my days as a student at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Going to a football game in Kenan Stadium, surrounded by towering pines, on a sunny autumn day; walking down Franklin Street in Chapel Hill on a Saturday night; studying among the grass and trees of one of the most beautiful campuses on Earth; and watching the ever-powerful Tar Heel basketball team drub another opponent at the Dean Dome.

Movie Theaters

by TimDaoust

Here is a look at where to go in Raleigh to see a movie if you want something more than just a chain movie theater and mainstream hollywood flicks.

Mission Valley Shopping center on the corner of Avent Ferry and Western Blvd used to be a United Artists theater but is now independently owned and along with the hollywood stuff there is the occasional indy flick that will grace the theater here. After the show, or before you can hang out at the cup a joe's or the record exchange right next door.

The Rialto is in an old theater on Glenwood Ave. and is mainly indy flicks. They also do the Rocky Horror picture show here every Friday at midnite. A cool place to go in general and its close to third place coffee and lily's pizza.

Another place to go is the Raleighwood theater. Now, I've never been but I hear it's a good experience. I mean, you get dinner and a movie here. How cool is that. Check out the website for more info. The fare is mainly bar and grill type stuff.

Great place to catch the game

by fightingobbler about Carolina Ale House

This place has countless TVs along with projector screens to show all the local (NHL Hurricanes, ACC sports, Carolina Panthers) games, as well as some out of the area. Just make sure to get there early if you plan on watching the game there. They have excellent food and a pretty good beer list. With 6 locations in the area, it shouldn't be too far from you. BTI Center for the Performing Arts

by TimDaoust

The complex is comprised of four venues, Memorial auditorium, Meymandi Concert Hall, Kennedy Theater and AJ Fletcher auditorium. All manner of events are held here from concerts to theater; The Broadway series south has all of its shows that come to the area here, and the NC Symphony plays regularly in Meymandi concert hall. Outside is the Lichtin plaza comprised of a nice fountain and courtyard area and the lobby inside is beautifully adorned with huge chandeliers and artwork. If you are in the area and want to see a show, this is the place to go.
