Travel Tips for Sunset Beach

No golf!!!

by etfromnc

There is no golf course on the Sunset Beach island, per se. If, however, you start to go into withdrawal, one of the best courses in the area is just across the Intracoastal Waterway. The Tiger's Eye course features a waterfall, a par 3 island hole, and remarkable elevation changes (a total of about 60"), at least for a course so close to the ocean.
Golf Digest has ranked it as "the third best course in Myrtle Beach." My brother disagrees, but what does he know.

Sea Trail

by etfromnc

Golf, meetings, vacations, and even real estate investment opportunities can be yours at the Sea Trail Conference Center and Golf Resort. Three separate courses deigned by three different course designers (Rees Jones, Dan Maples, and Willard Byrd) offer a beautiful array of challenges.
You can take a virtual tour of their courses at their website.
Their overnight accomodations are mostly one to four bedroom villas and start at around $300 per night. They do have planned activities for children and a fitness center which includes a swimming pool.

Bird Island

by etfromnc

A 1300 acre nature preserve owned by the state of North Carolina lies between Sunset Beach and the South Carolina state line. It is composed of beaches, marshlands, and other wetlands and was purcahsed by the state in 2002 for the primary purpose of maintaining a habitat for wildlife in that area, including several endangered species. The most famous of those species is probably the loggerhead sea turtle but they also include wood storks, piping plovers, Kemp's ridley, and black skimmers.

An unusual feature in the preserve is an old-fashioned rural mailbox. The words "Kindred Spirit" are written where you would normally expect the house number and residents' names to appear. Inside, there is a journal. Visitors are welcome to share their thoughts of the area with future visitors and, of course, to review the reflections of their predecessors.

Perhaps the most natural of the Carolina beaches

by etfromnc

"Southernmost North Carolina"

Sunset Beach is about as far south as you can go and still be in North Carolina. It is on the last of North Carolina's barrier islands, just northeast of South Carolina's Grand Strand. It is perhaps my favorite of the Carolina beaches because it is less crowded and the pace is more relaxed than at most of the others. (Everything is relative, however. There is no such thing as an uncrowded beach in the Carolinas unless you are there offseason and /or just before sunrise.)
Summer temperatures range from the low 70s to the high 80s Fahrenheit.
It is located on an island and it is one of the few beaches in the Carolinas where erosion is not a problem. In fact, due to its southward-facing orientaion, rather than the more common eastward-facing, the wind and water currents actually seem to be slowly adding to this small island which is approximately three miles long and less than a mile wide. Because of this "growth," some of the best wild sand dune walking in North America is available here. West of the fishing pier, there are many dunes which will still be there if you come back tomorrow but they will also be different. Opportunities to just park along the road and stroll toward the water are plentiful.

The Last of the unspoiled family beaches?

by VA_Dave

When I was growing up in Virginia, we use to go to unspoiled beaches Atlantic coast beaches, but most are very built up and commercial now.

But there is one perfect one left: Sunset Beach located between North and South Carolina.
No condos or high rises, just cottages. No boardwalk, just a couple of convenience stores.
A perfect hideaway to go with friends and family.

There is an old drawbridge linking Sunset Beach with the mainland, and there are plans
to replace it with a monstrosity of a concrete bridge. I fear that will be the end on this
eden. So better visit while you can.

My favorite activites:

1. Trek to the wildlife preserve on the adjacent Bird Island and read the Kindred Spirit jounal entries and maybe leave some of your own thoughts.

2. Get up a dawn and kayak or canoe through the marshes to the intra coastal waterway.
There are birds everywhere and you can drift right up to them. It you go past the
draw bridge you can sometimes draft up to herd of small wild goats on Bird Island.

3. Build the ultimate sand castle - my specialty is the Eiffel Tower.
