Travel Tips for Wilmington

Enjoy the Beaches

by 807Wheaton

There are several good beaches very near Wilmington. We were there two days. One day we drove North to Topsail Beach and the other day we drove South and saw Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and took the toll ferry to the mainland at charming, historic Southport. A good place to stop and spend a little time exploring their shops and town.

Pay for the view and drinks, but not food

by Sorianophoto about Oceanic

The restaurant has a killer view as it sits on Wrightsville Beach. It's a mixed atmosphere. You see middle age New Englander's trying to impress each other by picking an expensive restaurant and paying the tab, and then there are bikini wearing 30 year olds covered in sand, sunscreen, and tape protecting their new noses. It's odd.
The staff is slow, the food is all deep fried, there isn't a fishing industry left there so the fish came from further up the coast and some of it tasted like freezer burn.
The plus side is that the frou-frou drinks are good. The signature dish, Oceanic, was barely edible. Campbell's makes a clam chowder that tastes better than that. Everything else was deep fried and terrible. Oh, and who deep fries scallops when they have a wine bottles stored in every nook and cranny?
Joe's Crab Shack in landlocked Minnesota has better seafood.
Skip this one and get anything from the menu at Port City Chop House.

Enjoy the View

by mocks about The Oceanic

Here's another place for the special occasion. You can either eat in or go outside on the back pier to enjoy your meal. Locals seem to love this place as well, though, I tend to go when it's a group outing. During dinner, prepare to spend a good amount. However, during lunchtime on those Spring days, I've been known to take a book and enjoy my food out on the pier. If you're going to do that, remember, it's a bit more windy on the beach. Part of the pier is actually sectioned off so that people can fish off of it. I tend to get the grilled chicken sandwich with fries. It's decent, but I wish they would pile on the fries.

Riverwalk

by mocks

Aside from the beach or touring the battleship, you can a stroll down the riverwalk on the waterfront. The city revitalized that area past the information booth a year ago. Just behind the booth is a small building full of quaint little shops and past that, if you go further enough, you'll find yourself on the backside of shops as well as a couple of high end restaurants (Elijah's and The Pilot House, owned by the same company), where you can enjoy dining in or outside on the pier. For you Dawson Creek fans, the dining part of the pier was used in scenes from the show.

Tour Rides

by mocks

While downtown, for a light tour, you have the option of taking a horse drawn carriage, a trolley, or a boat ride. There are a couple of boats for you to choose. The most well known is on the Henrietta III Riverboat. During the weekends, you could also do dinner on it, last time I checked, it was $30 a couple for a ride and dinner. I took a friend of mine one time. It was her Christmas present. There's also a ghost walking tour that some guy gives everyday Just meet up by the information desk and look for a man in a black brimmed hat, white shirt, and a black vest. You can't miss him. He's with all these other tourists.
