The English are coming to Wilmington

by Beasteh

Hi there.
We're coming over to watch some footy (soccer), our team Sheffield Wednesday are in the US to play some friendly games, we're playing the HAmmerheads, and I'm just wondering about what the night life, bars and food places are like in Wilmington.

Obviously I've checked out the websites but I wouldn't mind a bit more feedback.

Live music?
Will we get some on an evening?

Also we wouldn't mind doing a bit of bowling and golf.
What's available for us?

One last thing...
Any of the locals going to watch the soccer?

What's the soccer standard like?
Anyone reading this going?

Thanks,
Steve:Beasie.

Hello fellow Owl!!!

Welcome to VT!

I'm not sure how familiar you are with this site, but there's quite a bit of information on here for Wilmington. I'll try to point you in the right direction!

You can read people's tips here:

http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/North_America/United_States_of_America/North_Carolina/Wilmington-828486/TravelGuide-Wilmington.html

Or you could send an email to somebody who lives there. Here is a list of all the Wilmington-based members of the site:

Have a great time watching the lads, and be sure to do some bouncing for me!!

Up the Owls!

Jonathan

PS Keep up the great work on OwlsOnline. It's always a pleasure to read your posts on there.

Thanks for that mate.

I'm finding me way around the site slowly.
I will try and e-mail someone and put some questions to them.

I suppose I was kinda hoping for that rare thing, some US footy fans, to chip in with something, so we could arrange a meet up.
There's a few of us going so it should be a good week.

I'm really looking forward to this trip...

There will of course be the usual rambles, and loads of photo's.

Travel Tips for Wilmington

Happenings

by mocks

Every Thursday, the Wilmington Morning Star adds a supplement to its day's edition highlighting activities in and around the city. Currents is a good start to see what events are taking place for the following week. You can either get it with the paper or seperately at various locations. I usually end up getting it at Perkins.

fort fisher museum

by doug48

the fort fisher civil war museum is a must see spot on a visit to fort fisher. the museum has exhibits and maps explaining the battle of fort fisher and an interesting collection of civil war relics.

the fort fisher civil war museum is located at the fort fisher historic site in kure beach. kure beach is 18 miles southeast of wilmington on US 421.

Very original and unique burrito restaurant...

by jsimmen about Flaming Amy's

Tons of different types of burritos (fried chicken, hamburger, steak, mahi mahi, tuna, etc...) at a very affordable price. Definitely worth checking out. Baywatch Burrito (Canjun mahi mahi and tuna). Also, the steak taco.

Bella's

by acemj about Bella's

They also have desserts and a full bar. It's not just a coffee shop. There's a tattoo parlor next door and every time I walked by, Bella's seemed to have a unique group of people gathered around the outdoor tables. I went in and grabbed a cold juice drink, but the important thing to note is that they provide FREE INTERNET ACCESS. Be warned, however, there is only one computer, so be patient if you need to check your email or check in with VT from the road.

Horsedrawn Carriage Tours

by msbrandysue

When I arrived in Downtown Wilmington I immediately saw the horsedrawn carriage trolley. I was a bit tired of walking as I'd already spent hours on the Battleship NC and I was hoping my family would go for the idea. Unfortunately, I wasn't so lucky. Instead I ended up on a bench resting watching others seem to have a great time. The tour website says there are all sorts of areas of Downtown they visit with a guide as your driver. The horses are beautiful!
