Volunteer activities & water activities

by DiannaD

I am considering relocating to Wilmington. What volunteer environmental activities are available in this area? (my special interests are whales & dolphins.)

I don't know about volunteer activities, but we see dolphins in the Intercoastal waterway from about Wrightsville Beach south. I got a picture of one in the marina at Mt. Pleasant (north of Charleston) at

http://www.uncw.edu/news/oldsite/for_the_media/experts/m.html is the URL for the Un NC at Wilmington - they seem to do a lot of dolphin research.

And http://whale.wheelock.edu/whalenet-stuff/studentdev.html is the URL of dolphin sites for K-12 by state.

Travel Tips for Wilmington

by acemj

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is a major university, but this is much more than just a college town. However, you will notice a youthful spirit around here with plenty of artist, bars and coffee houses to keep the young at heart of all ages happy.

by acemj

Wrightsville Beach is one of three major beach destinations in the area. The others are Carolina Beach and Kure Beach. The white sands and large homes make Wrightsville an impressive beach and I noticed that the crowds seemed very family-friendly.

Casual Burgers and Wraps

by msbrandysue about Red Robin's

Red Robin's is more famous for their stacked burgers than anything else... However, my mom and I go there for their salads and wraps. I have tried all of their wraps and hard time deciding which one to order each time I go...which is fairly often (sometimes up to once a week).

It can be loud in there...Most of the waiters are high school or college kids having a good time. It's very family oriented and has discounts for kids on certain nights with the mascot showing up once a week. In fact their website says Parents Magazine named them one of the top 10 family restaurants.

They usually have games on to watch which I've always liked. They also have a small bar and arcade.

Alcoholic drinks are served!!!

bellamy mansion

by doug48

the bellamy mansion was built in the greek revival-italianate style in 1861 by james post. the mansion is named after dr. john bellamy who later purchased the home. during the occupation of wilmington the house served as the headquarters of union general john schofield. on the grounds of the mansion is a large slave out building. today the bellamy mansion is a museum and is open to the public. for those interested in architecture, art, and southern history the bellamy mansion should not be missed on a visit to wilmington.
