Roy's Riverboat Landing (left) is a fixture downtown. You can dine in or sit outside on the walkway. On the right, is Water Street Restaurant. Owned by former mayor Harper Peterson, you can also dine in or out. During the weekends, WS has local music to go along with your dining experience. If it looks familiar, that's because it also was used in scenes for Dawson's Creek. For Roy's, I usually get the roasted chicken. And, for Water Street, a burger and fries usually does the trick for me.
Perkin's is one of those places where you can eat just about anything at any time of the day (well, almost anytime of the day). Since they stay open until 2 am Tues-Thurs., until 4am Fri and Sat, and until midnight on Sun-Mon., it's a frequent haunt for those that work the third shift or are getting in from the downtown clubs. It's not the only late night place, though, just down the road, Jimbo's opens at 10pm 'til the wee hours of the morning, while the Waffle House on Market is a late night diner for some. **Update: I'm sad to say that as of December 4th, 2005; Perkins will be converted to a Mediterranean Bar & Grill. The owner of Perkins decided to sell the restaurant and retire. No more Tremendous Twelves for me.** I love, I mean LOVE the Tremendous Twelve (4 eggs, 4 meats, a sizable side of hashbrowns, and those fluffy big (4) pancakes). It's only $7.99 (including tax). For that amount, it's pretty substantial.
If you go in the opposite direction of the riverwalk, you'll notice the old Courthouse on the right. The fountain atop the steps is a nice little touch the building and those of you that used to watch the show Matlock will recognize the courthouse in the opening credits of the series.
This place really surprised me. I'm not a huge military history buff and I really was more interested in visiting the battleship in order to take some photos from high on its bow across the river. However, I was amazed at the full access, self-guided tour that takes you to almost every inch of this impressive ship. The ship served in every battle of World War II and miraculously only 10 sailors perished in all of her battles.
I was told by some locals that sometimes you'll see alligator's if you look over the edge of the ship that faces away from town.
