fort fisher was a earthen confederate fort located on the southern tip of the cape fear peninsula. because of it's strategic position at the mouth of the cape fear river fort fisher was nicknamed the "gibraltar if the confederacy". between december 7 th and decmber 27 th 1964 the forces of union general benjamin bulter laid seige on fort fisher. the confederate defenders of fort fisher were commanded by general robert f. hoke and colonel william lamb. the union failed to capture fort fisher and general butler was relieved of his command. pictured is the fort fisher monument. fort fisher is a very interesting place to visit for students of civil war history. for more information see the attached web sites.
fort fisher is located 18 miles southeast of downtown wilmington on US 421 at kure beach.
A local Cuban and Mexican Restaurant in a small strip mall near Target off Market and New Center Drive. Not fancy, not a chain, come as you are style. In the four months I stayed in Wilmington for work, I went to this restaurant about 15 times. It was never busy, the service was good, and the food was really good.
The Lomo de Puerco isn't on the menu, unless they are running a special, but it is available as it is part of a large platter of food, the name of which I cannot recall. It is slow-cooked perfection. The jicama slaw served with it is to die for. If you can, request a large bowl of it, it's jicama and cantaloupe heaven.
The cuban sandwich is perfection. I think they must bake the bread in-house for it to be so perfect. It's usually on the weekly special. Ask for the jicama slaw on the side. Regardless of what the menu says, they serve curly fries with the cuban.
The chicken enchiladas were good and are best washed down with a Strawberry Smoothie with Rum. Oh, those huge Strawberry Smoothies. Those are worth a full day's travel. Lomo de Puerco, Chicken Enchiladas, Jicama Slaw, Strawberry Smoothies.
Every time I walked by this place it was full of people who looked like locals. That's gotta be a good sign. I didn't have a chance to eat here, though, but I'll go out on a limb and recommend it. Don't send me the bill if it's not good!
The main tourist attraction in Wilmington. The USS North Carolina is now permanently docked across the river in Wilmington. Tours of the battleship are given. A great opportunity to see a battleship.
