Maides Park
by davecallahan
This picnicking and walking park has been newly renovated for safety and handicap access.
The restroom facilities are near the parking area and not far from the picnic tables (with grills) that dot the main part of the park. There are playgrounds for the kids, athletic fields for group activites, blacktopped ball courts and a recreation center for indoor activities (like table games and arts/crafts. There are a few walking paths on the north and west ends of the park where some minimal birding can be done in early morning hours.
New police patrols guarantee the safety of park visitors.
This is a nice park to spend a few hours relaxing when on a busy vacation or work trip.
UPDATE 2008
The park is presently going through a second round of renovation and may be closed for an extended period of time. This is to improve the park and the Parks Department does not want anyone to get hurt during the reconstruction project. Just call (910) 341-7855 during this period to be sure the ark will be available when you need it.
to get there:
1101 Manley Avenue
US17 (Market Street) runs through Wilmington. US17 forks into Princess Place Drive going west and that road connects with Manley Avenue. go north on Manley and see the park signs
Hardy Dishes
by mocks about Front Street Brewery
Front Street Brewery, a place where you can take your visiting friends, family, or just celebrate your graduation. Since it's for those occasions, I only go sparingly. People seem to love the atmosphere. However, I noticed it's a bit dark in there. Wish they would spring some extra bucks to put in more lightbulbs. On the rare occasions I go (usually with a group outing), I tend to get burgers and fries. Hmmm. There seems to be a pattern here. lol. Burgers and fries in a restaurant here usually runs you about $6-$8.

The American Ale was excellent and the crowd was very welcoming. I sat and talked with locals and tourists alike for three hours while sipping the handcrafted beers and eating a really good crab cake sandwich.
Thalian Hall
by mocks
Even still in downtown Wilmington, you can also enjoy cultural events such as at Level 5 City Stage on Front Street (right beside a couple of dance clubs; there's also a rooftop bar on that level) or at Thalian Hall, which features concerts, plays, and what I really like, The Cinematique Series. WHQR, the public radio station holds viewings of foreign and independent films at Thalian. Actually, legend has it that Thalian Hall is haunted. I, myself, have not seen anything there; but, hey, if you want to try your luck at spotting a ghost, have at it. On a side note, WHQR also holds little cultural events in their downtown office lobby.
river cruise
by doug48
a fun thing to do is to take the henrietta III river boat cruise. the henrietta III is named after the henrietta steam boat that was launched in wilmington in 1818. the original henrietta carried freight and passengers on the cape fear river between wilmington and fayetteville for over 40 years. today you can take the replica steam boat henrietta for lunch and dinner cruises on the cape fear river. for admission and times see the attached web site.
