B&B's in Wilmington

by cheriec

My daughter and I would like to drive to Wilmington the week of March 13th and spend a few days in a B&B. Can we expect the weather to be warm mid-March? What is there to DO besides explore shops and walk along the beach? Are there any B&B's you would recommend? Thanks!

Wilmington in March is beautiful. The weather will probably be pleasant, and the early bloomers should be ... blooming. The redbud and daffodils.
I think any B & B downtown would be nice. You could walk to the stores on the waterfront, and through the historic district.
I recommend the aquarium in Fort Fisher, and while you are down there, take the ferry to Southport. You get a great view of the river and the waterway.
How old is your daughter? What are her interests?

Thanks for your response. My daughter is almost 23 and in her final year of nursing at university. She'll graduate in April. We like exploring unique shops, hiking, touring and sightseeing. She likes sailing, water sports, kayaking, snowboarding, and is generally an active, outgoing person. (I like to read!) By the way, is the downtown/historic district SAFE for the two of us ladies to explore? Thanks again for your help!

Travel Tips for Wilmington

The Preferred Choice

by mocks

The more well known publication locals look at is Encore. It's chock full of articles and listings of events and views around Wilmington. You can pick it up anywhere in the city. It usually comes out every Wednesday and covers a week's worth of information. I tend to check out the column, "News of the Weird." Whenever I go into Priddy Boy's Sandwich Shop, most of the people eating solo are munching on their Juniorboys and reading Encore.

brunswick town

by doug48

brunswick town was founded in 1726 by maurice moore. brunswick town was a major pre-revolutionary port on the cape fear river. two successive royal governors of north carolina lived in brusnwick town. the town began to decline in 1770 when the capital of north carolina moved to new bern. in 1776 british troops destroyed the town during the revolutionary war. in 1842 the remains of brunswick town became part of orton plantation. duing the civil war fort anderson was built on top of the foundations of the town. today the only remaining structure is the ruins of st. phillip's anglican church and graveyard. brunswick town and fort anderson are very interesting places to visit for those interested in colonial and civil war history.
from downtown wilmington take US 74 east to the belville exit. take river road (SR 133) south to orton road s.e. fort anderson and brunswick town is about 18 miles southwest of wilmington.

Fun, Fun

by mocks about Rum Runners

Rum Runners opened up last year. It's a pretty sizable place. The thing about it is that it's a dualing piano bar/restaurant. The guys who are playing are pretty fun to hear and watch and sometimes the waitresses get into the schtick. If you want to hear a song, you'll have to go up and tip the players, but you'll have to tip more than a few bucks to get them to play the tune. The food is substantial enough for a meal. One of the more odd things is that after 9pm, they start charging $5 to get in. I guess that's because of the bar or something. That's why I usually go around 6 or 7. Surprisingly, it gets packed on the weekends. When I say packed, I mean packed. People seem to love singing along with the Piano Man. lol. Again, I usually get burger and fries. The fries are first rate. But, there are other items on the menu that you could probably enjoy.

USS North Carolina

by mocks

Another main attraction to the area is the USS North Carolina, a de-commissioned battleship from WWII. Sorry about the pic, but I didn't feel like taking the bridge to get to it. It's a lot easier to go to the waterfront and look at it from across the way. Tours are always given no matter what the season and a lot of people seem mesmerized by the whole thing. A minor thing to view is the alligator that swims close to the ship. He's an attraction all to himself. They just recently started showing movies on the ship and, from what a friend tells me (he took his girlfriend there recently), it gets pretty packed. There is a little park area right next to ship and if you notice on the show, One Tree Hill, some of the scenes are filmed there. You'll end up seeing downtown Wilmington in the background.

Wilmington's old Cotton Exchange

by Tom_Fields

With 34 shops and restaurants, the old Cotton Exchange is an excellent place to take a lunch break, buy souvenirs, and just go hang out. These buildings date back nearly a century, and have served as a downtown shopping center since 1975.
