ICON OF BYGONE ERA...not ME!..the SHELL STATION.
"Collecting Shells In Winston-Salem"
Winston-Salem is a small city about 40 miles west of Greensboro, about
1. 5 hours from my home. In this area you will find the Moravian
village, where tours are available to view the working bakery,
blacksmith shop and other attractions associated with the traditional
Moravian life, complete with cobblestone streets. That, and the NC
School of the Arts are the most interesting things in town, I suppose,
but there are some sights worth seeing if you just want to take the
time to drive around--beautiful architecture and old estates. But
don't drive too fast, or you'll miss all the local color and perhaps
even this little retro-station...but don't go with an empty
tank...this place is not open.
Though there are alot of great places in the Winston- Salem area,
there IS this one place that stands out in my memory more than any
other as the most unique place in town (other than the dorm-dwellers
at the NC School of the Arts --hey-- love ya!). It`s an OOOOOOOLD
funky Shell Gas Station kinda near the school. I never have seen
another like it, and I`m not even sure it`s still there (after all,
this photo is several years old, taken on a disc camera when they were
popular); if anyone knows more about this place, please leave me a
note. It would be a real shame if it has been torn down. One day,
driving around with my friend while vocalizing loudly out the window,
we came upon this quirky little building sitting vacant and unimposing
on a street corner, just like it belonged there, as if it were
indistinguishable from any other house in the neighborhood. It seemed
like such a Route 66 kind of place, we just had to stop and mark the
moment with a picture. Another good day. There are a lot of other
places in town for fine dining, dive-diggin, and absorbing a little
culture...look for events produced and offered by the various
departments at the School of the Arts, one of the nation`s leading
universities for instruction in Fine Arts. You won`t be
disappointed... PLEASE CLICK ON PHOTO TO ENLARGE, IF YOU LIKE. I`M NOT
REALLY A PIN-HEAD...most of the time.
