Quiet Home Like setting away from Home
Shell Island is located at the end of Wrightsville Beach so you do not get a lot of traffic. Of course this also means you are a short drive or bike ride from the restaurants and stores located on the island, but a small price to pay for peace and quite. All of the rooms are ocean view and have a balcony as well as a small kitchenette. There are two pools, one indoor and one out as well as a hot tub. One suggestion though, as the units are actually privately owned some are nicer than others. You may want to get there early and make sure you get a good room.

At the End of the Beach
This is a nice condo-type resort. You have all the amenities of a little condo, full kitchen, one and a half baths, plus a living room area. All units are oceanfront with balconies.
Unique Quality: The characteristic I enjoyed the most was that my condo had full glass doors and windows on the ocean side. So the view was wonderful...watching the sun rise every morning over the ocean...nothing to block my view.

Pool closed, AC broke...no one repaired...had to change rooms. The food was poor. The wait staff in the restaurant could not describe the features on the menu and did not seem interested. We will never stay at Shell Island again!! When the price is over $200 a night it should not have absurd issues.
Nice, but drawbacks
We (family of 4 with 2 small boys) went to Shell Island Resort for a quick weekend getaway. We usually stay at the Sunspree, but it was full so we tried Shell Island. The price was right and the view was gorgeous on both sides (marshes and ocean), but the suite and the service left a bit to be desired. The suite was nicely decorated and had a kitchen, but the fixtures were old and the suite was barely clean. My 3 year old found an old raisin on the bedroom floor. Fingerprints and stains around the kitchen area. For the prices they get for these places in peak season, you'd think they could upgrade and clean the place. The heated indoor pool was nice (although small) and the beach was fantastic. The complementary breakfast was continental but had eggs, so that was nice. The little store in the lobby was closed except for a few hours sporadically, so I was constantly thirsty since the water in the rooms is nasty (typical beach thing) and they had no bottled water in the vending machines. You have to schlep up to the front desk to ask for towels for the pool area, which is inconvenient. And the hallway area going from the indoor pool to the lobby smelled disgusting. All-in-all, it was adequate, and the views count for a lot, but I'm glad we were only there for a 1-night stay. We probably wouldn't go back because we love the Sunspree down the road which is much better for kids, cleaner, and has more amenities.
Nature Lovers Paradise
Stayed at Shell Island Suites for two nights in November 2005. Never having been to Wrightsville Beach, I was not sure of what we would find. Shell Island is located at the farthest end of the island and has the most amazing surroundings I have encountered on the east coast. The beach is hughe, the sand white, and the water clear. Behind the resort are marshes with alot of birds etc. What a beautiful sight steeping off the elevators and geting views of both the beach and the marsh. The resort is older but is well taken care of. The suites are comfortable, well appointed, and clean. The suites all face the beautiful ocean. Keep in mind the suites are not very large and 4 people would probably more than enough in one suite. I have been to most all the beaches in NC & SC but found this one to be by far the most beautiful and the water was clear instead of brownish. Don't miss the sunrise and sunset at this location it is fabulous. Enjoy and be sure I'll be back to Shell Island as soon as I can.
Disappointing for the price
We went to Shell Island with our two small boys, and another family that has two small children as well .Our main issue with the resort is that for the price it was a major disappointment. The family we traveled with hit the nail on the head when they commented... "It looks like this place is well past it's prime. The resort is outdated aestheically... borderline filthy, with very small pools considering the size of the resort. The lobby looked as if it belonged in a $40.00 a night roadside motel. The showers did not work well, and the bathrooms made us want to Lysol the entire place. The best features were the beach and the views, which were very nice, but considering that Shell Island has nothing to do with either of these features, I can only give them so much credit for what we did enjoy. The other issue that greatly concerned us is that the balcony railings were wide enough for my four year old to fit through. We have no desire to ever stay at this resort again, and we feel as though we paid a premium price for a econo experience.
Great Trip
Our family of four from Colorado had a great vacation at Shell Island. I was a worried from other reviews that we had not picked a nice place to stay and it turned out that we were more than happy with our accomodations.
The Sunspree would have been more that $700 more for our six night trip and definitely not worth it. We got the best rates by booking through Shell Island hotel website more than 30 days out.
The room was a very clean nice suite, recently decorated in a beach theme. It was great to have a frig, microwave, and sink. We enjoyed the privacy of our bedroom while the kids slept in the main room.
The ocean view and beach were amazing. The waves were not too strong and the water was warm.
The maid cleaned our room every day, including washing dishes and leaving extra towels or blankets as we needed. The indluced breakfast was not much but cereal or a bagel in the morning and fresh coffee were appreciated.
Wrightsville Beach was great!
Very Accomodating
This was our second trip to Shell Island and it was even better than the first. After a nightmare of a flight, we settled into a room on the first floor that I had requested originally. The rooms are all that you can ask for with everything you could possibly need. We did change our reservation however, and wanted a room on the upper level. We pointed this out to the desk person and by 10am the next morning we were in our new room on the fourth floor. The room, view, beach, free breakfast, and most of all, the people were so accomodating it made the trip! Comfortable bed and pillows and the kitchen has everything you should need which made dining alot more affordable. We thought the parking area was just fine and never had to search long for a spot. 2 trips there and we would go back in a heartbeat.
It was a great place to stay
We stayed there July 2 - July 6, and it was a really good place to stay. I would definitely stay there again. I don't really have any major problems about this place, the only reason I didn't give it an excellent rating is because there is no place on earth that is perfect. The view from the room was spectacular, the food was alright (didn't have much of a selection), in the bedroom there was a Tempur-Pedic mattress (very, very comfortable), the maid washed all the dishes we dirtied, the cable was alright (not very many channels), the beach wasn't far at all from the hotel, the staff was very friendly and I had very little problems with the hotel. Highly Reccommend. Thanks
