  • Located within the North Unit of Roosevelt National Park, the Juniper Picnic Area and Campground has about 50 campsites. The sites are for both tents and RVs, with a 50 foot size limit for RVs. There are no hook-ups or showers available, however there are flush toilets and vaulted toilets in the campground. You may stay in Juniper Campground for 15 consecutive days, and 30 days total per year. Sites are available on a first come, first serve basis only. Mark your campsite by placing the stub from your envelope on the campsite post. Be aware that only 6 people, and two vehicles are allowed per site.

Juniper has a dump station, but since facilities are limited in the winter, you may wish call and ask if this dump is open if visiting in the winter.

The 1.1 mile loop Little Mo Nature Trail is located here. 0.7 miles of this trail is paved and wheelchair accessible.

  • Swimming Pool In the Americinn - Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park
    Swimming Pool In the Americinn
    by KimberlyAnn
Before we began going back and fourth to Michigan each year with our camper trailer, we always enjoyed staying in the Americinn Motel and Suites on our way home. We stayed there when we traveled through in the fall, when the inn offers much lower off-season rates. There are a variety of types of rooms to choose from, ranging from the typical leisure traveler’s rooms, to suites with whirlpools and fireplaces. You may also request a room with a small refrigerator and microwave. Free wireless high-speed Internet access, and cable TV with movie channels are standard.

Children 12 years of age and under stay free with an adult.

If you are a member of the AAA, you may get a discount by showing your membership card.

I love the wonderful indoor heated swimming pool. It is a nice size, and kept very clean. When we stopped here I always took a swim either before dinner or after. Besides the pool there is also a sauna, whirlpool, and a game area.

If you are staying for a number of days, the inn has guest laundry facilities.

The Americinn Motel’s fee includes a continental breakfast each morning.

  • Overlooking the campground from the road. - Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park

There is but one camping place to stay in the park: Cottonwood campground. This are has 76 sites and are available on a first-come, first-served basis (no reservations). Many of the sites have RV hookups as well as areas for through-hikers. The camping is relatively primitive; potable water, bathrooms are available, but there are no hook-ups for water, sewer, or electric (for you vans or RVers).

The campground lies on the banks of the Little Missouri River, which means is surrounded by cottonwood trees and thickets. It is private, and you can really see the stars at night,it's so dark there. My only nit is the mosquitoes... they love to attack the face, which can be really annoying.

Even at almost $100 a night, we found the hotels in Dickinson to be more reasonably priced than in Medora, where TRNP is located.
The room was rather small, but clean, as was the bathroom. The sink was outside the bathroom which to me, is always great. There were plenty of electrical outlets and all the lights worked. This room had a fridge and microwave; we could not get the microwave to work strong enough to pop popcorn, so we took it to the breakfast room and used the microwave there, which worked fine. There was no place to hang clothes here.
Breakfast included "make your own waffles", cold boiled eggs, bagels, bread for toast, sweet rolls, 3 kinds of cold cereal, instant oatmeal, and fresh fruit. They also had assorted fruit juices, and good coffee.
The pool here includes a water park at no extra charge. They also have a pretty good hot tub. There were birthday parties both afternoons we were here so the water park and the pool were full of kids both afternoons and evenings. I am sure this is a great place to visit as a get-away during the North Dakota winter.
There are a lot of rooms here; it's bigger than it looks. They have a good high speed computer in the lobby in a corner, and it was not in use very often. The desk personnel were very friendly and efficient. I would say this was a good place to stay for a daytrip to Medora and TRNP because there a quite a few places to eat around here that are also more affordable than what was in Medora.

The Comfort Inn has a very nice water park at no extra charge. Good hot tub too.
There is a Bonanza Restaurant right behind the Comfort Inn, within easy walking distance. They gave us a $6.99 Seniors dinner price for the food bar. There were chicken wings on the bar along with lots of vegetables, salads, and fruit. After being on the road for a week, it's good to find a place that has vegetables and fruit.

  • Our Favorite Campsite in Cottonwood - Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park
    Our Favorite Campsite in
    Cottonwood
    by KimberlyAnn, 4 more photos
Cottonwood Campground has 76 sites and is open all year. Seventy of the sites are for RVs or tent camping. The other six sites are tent sites. (See photos 3 – 5 for views of tent sites.) All the campsites, except for the group campsite, are available on a first come, first served basis only. The group campsite can be reserved. After choosing a site and filling out the envelope, placing your payment inside of it, be sure to place your envelope stub on your campsite post. The sites are limited to one family, with no more than six people, and two vehicles per campsite. Be aware that you are not allowed to tie ropes or tent lines to trees.

There are no hook-ups or showers available, however there are flush toilets and vaulted toilets in the campground. You may stay in Cottonwood Campground for 15 consecutive days, and 30 days per year.

The facilities are limited in the off-season, with only one water spigot and a pit toilet available.

There is no RV dump station within the park, and it is illegal to dump any waste material, either black or gray water on the ground. May through September there is a commercial dump station in Medora for RVs.

This campground is within the park, and has a number of cottonwood trees to provide shade (see photo 2). Some of the campsites have very nice views. You may see bison within the park. Do not get close to these animals, remember they are wild, and dangerous, so enjoy them from a safe distance.
