Travel Tips for Berlin

HOLMES COUNTY

by LoriPori

Home of the world's largest Amish Community, HOLMES COUNTY is located in Central Ohio. Here you can explore the unique culture of the Amish, savour homemade foods in the numerous family-style Buffet restaurants, shop for handmade quilts and local artwork.
Amish country includes Millersburg, Berlin, Walnut Creek and Sugarcreek - all located along scenic route 39. As you travel through the scenic rolling hills and the quiet country roads, you can reflect on the peaceful, slow-paced lifestyle of the Amish. Be sure to see the farms with fields that are still plowed by teams of horses, instead of modern machinery. Why not take a tour of an Amish farm, where you can even take a buggy ride.
In the little towns, you will see hitching posts for the horses. You will also find little shops with all kinds of homemade jellies, cheeses, fresh baked items, etc.
And be sure to stop at the Mennonite Information Center located just east of Berlin.

Quaint Places Not To Miss

by deecat

The following are a few quaint places in Holmes County that you would perhaps enjoy:

Ms Gadgets; What a place with hundreds of kitchen gadget, bakeware, linens, and cookware. They also have a good selection of foods, sauces, and dips. They also have cookie cutters and cake decorating supplies.

The best part not to miss is the homemade fudge! They have such flavors as Cappuccino, Maple Nut, Chocolate Walnut, Tiger Butter, Mint Chocolate Swirl, and Peanut Butter!

It's located in the Old Berline Mill in Berline, Ohio on the town square. (330-893-1481).

Sol's Exchange--really three sections: Sol's Exchange, Palace and Kit-n-Kaboodle! It's a must see as Ohio's largest arts and crafts mall. There are three stores that are filled with thousands of "unique, handmade, one-of-a-kind decorative and gift items." They have lots of parking, which is important in Berlin.
Located on West Main Street (330-893-3134.
*****************************************************

Gramma Fannies Quilt Bar that is in Memory of Gramma Fannie. This is an unique shop in an old converted barn on the farm. There are rough timbers and wood flooring. They have hundreds of Amish made quilts and also Gramma Fannies personal quilt patterns.

They have RJR, Marcus Brothers, antique reproductions, Japaneese prints, quilting notions, books, and patterns;

******************************************************************************************************* Sommers General Store is as though you are shopping back in the "Good Old Days!" They have soda pop in long-neck bottles, barrels of old-fashioned candy, kitchen gadgets, John Deere and Ohio State collectibles, but the best item I saw was the Berlin Flyer Wagon. I also saw cookbooks, puzzle, cards, and a multitude of other small items.

It's on the main drag in Berlin.

When planning your visit to...

by windoweb

When planning your visit to America’s Amish Country, please consider that the Amish themselves do not solicit nor encourage tourism to their quiet countryside farms. In fact, they avoid anything more than casual contact with strangers and any possible influence from the outside world of the Englisher just as they have for more than three hundred years.

Legends of Massillon

by davecallahan

This is a resort style golf course with private memberships and upscale homes along some fairways. Public use is available during the summer but you have to call ahead for tee times.
$30 is the cost of 18 holes and a cart.

There are 3 sets of 18 holes you can play (one set overlaps the other two). The shortest course is 4900 yards and the longest is 6900 yards so you have a wide variety of games to play. The short tees are made for duffers like me and can be enjoyed by any non-skilled golfer. The better golfers prefer the more rigorous and frustrating long tees and a much longer time on the fairways.

Most of the holes feature a water hazard or water on the periphery.

There is a large driving range and a snack bar for refreshment afterwards.
Be sure to bring water bottle because it can be ver hot here in the summer.

largest Amish buggy

by davecallahan

The Wendell Austin Forge company created this huge buggy for who-knows-why!
It is about 10 feet tall and 13 feet long and weighs more than a half-ton.

Good for a couple of quick pictures and that is about it. (there are also great bakeries and cheese places in Berlin)

the location of the company is at: 7007 route 62 (near route 39).
you can take self-guided tours of the company where the buggy is on display.
