One night in cleveland

by eunhasoo999

Me and my friends (three 23 year olds, one guy and two girls) will be in Cleveland for dinner and drinks on Saturday night, and some very brief sightseeing of the lake on Sunday morning.

Where should we go to see the lake?

We just want to be able to walk around the shore and take some pictures...
Is there a lakeside park that's easy to go to?? Nothing fancy.. Just some nice view.. :)

And also, I've tried looking at the map of cleveland but it seems like there are so many different districts/areas and I don't know where the "happening place" is.

Which area has the most bars/ restaurants?

Can you also recommend a jazz bar?

For a happening place downtown you want to go to the Flats. Great bar and restaurant sceene. For a view of the lake you have several options. The bluffs along the city water front are interesting, the area down around the Rock and Roll Hall of fame give you a nice harbor view, and if you go east past Burke Lake Front Airport to the end of the road (a couple of miles) there is a park down there with nice views back to the city.

I wouldn't miss the West Side Market on Saturday, if you are there in time.

For night life I would recommend the Warehouse District over the Flats. The Flats have really gone downhill in the past few years. A link to the Warehouse District is below:

Also, the following link provides some good waterfront parks.

Edgewater Park and Whiskey Island (adjacent to Edgewater) are my favorites for easy access, close to downtown lake scenery.

Hope this helps.

Travel Tips for Cleveland

Pick up the local free...

by kthorn

Pick up the local free newspaper, the Free Times. Cleveland is a good weekend visit type of town. There are touristy type things, e.g. the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but the best things are the well kept secrets of the natives. The Free Times will be a good guide to these 'secret' places.

Peter Lewis Building, at Carnegie Mellon (2002)

by yooperprof

Frank Gehry comes to Cleveland!

The Peter Lewis Building is home to the School of Business and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. Gehry's signature use of molded aluminum panels makes the building stand out dramatically on the pleasant CM campus. Peter Lewis, a local entrepreneur, generously contributed the tub of money which was necessary to commission the structure, and played a vital role in seeing the project through to completion. Cleveland architectural fans are indebted to this modern Maecenas for bringing Gehry's work to their city. at 10090 Euclid Avenue, in the University Circle district. Architectural tours of the building are offered on weekdays.

Weather reports are not always accurate here

Bring an Umbrella and wear layered clothing The weather can change and is quite variable so an umbrella and layer clothing may be a good idea. Since the area is near the Great Lakes rain is always a possiblity.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Ok, so there is this guy in Cleveland, he was taken in the NBA draft at the age of 18. I hear he is pretty good. His name is Lebron something? It was on the tip of my tounge, I'll think of it in a moment.

Seriously though. Cleveland has what could be the greatest player in NBA history waiting to develop. I am a huge Cav's fan, even from long before Lebron. (Anyone remember a guy named World B. Free?) But Lebron is great as a rookie, I can't wait to see what he becomes with a few years under his belt. Forget Jordan, this guy rocks!

I was lucky enough to watch him play highschool B-ball at a tournement in my hometown and was shocked and awed by how astounding he was. Would not miss a game if I were living up there.

Outdoor Museum/Garden of the Dead

Lakeview Cemetery was founded in 1869 and is the resting place for nearly 100,000 people. Some of the best sculpture I've ever seen is here. There is so much to see (including the most famous tomb....that of the 20th president, James A. Garfield).....monuments, crypts, mausoleums, and many rare plants and flowers.
Last year there was a sculpture show throughout the cemetery, there was a play given amongst the headstones last summer, and there are always new gardens being planted.
Pack a picnic lunch and wander through here for an afternoon.
