Travel Tips for Columbus

Buckeyes are all about luck

by AnitaCarrie

There are many local customs about the Buckeyes (People from Ohio are often referred to as Buckeyes, because Ohio is the Buckeye State).

What is a Buckeye? Well it is an inedible nut, that resembles an eye of a Buck (male deer). Kind of self explanatory. What are they good for if you can't eat them?, being lucky.

For instance all incoming freshmen as The Ohio State University receive a buckeye upon orientation. Keeping a buckeye in your pocket is to bring you good luck.

Columbus is all about University football. Ohio State U's big rival is University of Mi... ...the University of Mich...Michigha....n... Michigan.... It is very common to no say their name (unless you are singing "We don't give a da** about the whole state of Michigan") and refer to them as "The State Up North" Saying the name of the "State Up North" is considered bad luck around game time.

Buckeyes will also flock to Mirror lake (a small man made lake on the Ohio State campus) the Thursday before the big game (Mich vs Ohio), and jump in. Now this may not seem like such a big deal, but if you know anything about Ohio and it's unpredictable weather..... This day is usually pretty flipping cold. Also the lake is pretty grungy, even grungier after the fact. Days later flipflops, cellphones and other miscellaneous things appear in and around the lake. (I've done it once, I had to through away my shoes, and it was a pretty chilly adventure back to my apartment). You don't have to actually jump in if you want to see it, but I don't recommend standing close to the edge if you don't want to get wet!

The rivalry of OSU & Mich is all in fun, but I still wouldn't recommend wearing blue and maize on game day if you don't want to draw some negative attention.

Need some luck before a big test? Inside the Main library on OSU campus there is a bust of a man (I believe Rev. Oxley Thompson) is is customary to rub his nose (which is why it is a different color than the rest of him) for good luck on exams.

Great Pizza!

by little_liebchen about Iacono's

This is my parents' favorite place for pizza, and I would never have been introduced to it if they hadn't taken me there. They serve pasta, salads, sandwiches and steaks too, but since I only get to eat there about once a year, I go for the pizza every time.

The atmosphere is very laidback. I've been to two of their locations (Sawmill and Hilliard), and both of them have friendly service. It's also a kid-friendly place. The Sawmill location has a Sunday buffet. I think it's obvious by now...the pizza. I like mine with mushrooms.

Great place for wings, beer and games

by spartan about Buffalo Wild Wings & Weck

This is the place in Columbus to get the best wings. From mild to what they call 'blazin hot' you get your chicken's worth here. Bring an appetite and drink lots of cold ones (beer, soda, water, etc.) to wash those wings down.

So what is Buffalo Wild Wings? It's a place where you get great food at a decent price, where you can pull tables together, hang with your friends and watch the game on TV or play National Trivia Network (NTN) games at your table. Chicken Wings of course - get an order of 12 Wings and top it off with Teriyaki (easy on the palate) or Caribbean Jerk (spicy) along with an order of potato wedges with cheese or pepperoni pockets.

Park City 1: Schiller Park

by tvdandy

Oh yes, Columbus has many, many wonderful parks, for all those young professionals, students from OSU and people of all ages, and, you guessed it, hippies! Schiller Park is located right in the heart of German Village. A cool park with nice ponds with bridges which one can fish off. A beautiful assortment of flowers and other gardening bonanzas. There are many benches where one can relax and read, chat, meditate, whatever. Many picnic tables under shady trees. Nice walking trails. What is especially cool about this park is that there is an outdoor stage where in the summer Shakespeare in the Park performs.

More Interesting But Unknown Architectural Details

by atufft

I found myself a bit confused walking around and behind the Columbus City Hall, where as I recall pedestrian access transitioned to a lawn and then an awkward and abrupt descent over a wall or fence. Anyway, I looked back at the LeVeque Building and saw this excellent raised colonnade, but I couldn't figure out what it belonged to. Also, In the walk back around to High Street, I found this cool early 20th century highrise. Both of these places must be on the National Register of Historic Places because the great architectural details dated to the early 20th century. Any local help to better classify these buildings would be greatly appreciated.
