Travel Tips for Columbus

About an hour south of...

by 1sassyfemme

About an hour south of Columbus there is a place tucked away in the hills, Smoke Rise Ranch, that offers a wide variety of outdoor activities.
My reason for coming was for Spring Jam, a two day music festival. Smoke Rise Ranch provides hundreds of acres of campgrounds with plenty of trees for shade. If tent camping isn't your style, the ranch also has cabins available with bath houses near by and electricity. You can also go horseback riding for a small hourly fee. In all, Smoke Rise Ranch is a good time whether you've come to have fun or get in tough with the outdoorsman or woman in you.
This was a very exciting festival for me. Not only was it my birthday, and not only was I going to see my favorite band, but I had almost all of my local friends together! Everytime Dark Star Orchestra played a song it seemed to be for my friends and we all hugged and sang and danced!! My friend Gene and I were nearly in tears as we stood there holding hands as 'Terrapin Station' cast its spell over the hilltop.

A gyro and a donut at 3am?! SWEET!

by AnitaCarrie about Buckeye Donuts

So you just got out of a club, bar, or just need a late night study break? Buckeye Don's is where to go. This small dineresque, gyro and donut shop is well known and good eats. You can get a meal (gyro, crinkle fries, and a pop) for about 5 bucks, and the more donuts you buy the cheaper they are, and they are always fresh. You never know who you are going to meet there, and I have been pulled into conversations with strangers many a times there.

Veggie options available!
Open 24hrs, 7 days a week Gyro, crinkle fries, pop + apple donut = me so very happy

Topiary Garden

For any art lover, Georges Seurat's immortal painting Sunday Afternoon on L'Isle de la Grande Jatte stands as the best example of the Pointillist style. This was an outgrowth of Impressionism.

This park pays homage to Seurat's work, by re-creating it in three dimensions. It's on the grounds of the Old Deaf School Park. It's open from April to December.

Kids at base of King Neptune Statue at COSI

Here the kids are standing at the base of King Neptune statue.

It was alittle dark and scared the smaller ones in the group but it smelled like the sea and it was nice with sounds of ocean/sea gulls, very soothing to me.

Better read the book Winesburg, Ohio

"Dollville/Dullville"

If you stay home and read Sherwood Andersons book titled Winesburg, Ohio you'll never have to make a trip to Ohio as a tourist. On the other hand if you are easily enchanted by the oddities you can find in mundane places then you'd be surprized "what might find you" in a place called Ohio. The photo here is of a found object Art Totem Pole applied by local types to a disused telephone pole. Located at the interesection of what locals call the "Hi-Butt" just next to "good-ole park" (High Street and Buttles Avenue and Goodale Park) - definately one of the more intriguing finds in this town marking an unusual place in a usual sort of town.

"Central Station Columbus Ohio"

To arrive in Columbus, Ohio by train you will first need to travel back in time. Central Station was razed and a concrete and glass Hyatt Regency was built back in the 1980's. All that remains of the train station is this singular arch of a once grand building from a more gracious American era. Nowadays passenger trains between Cincinnati and Cleveland cannot even make a stop to the state capital as there is no station. Smells like Automobive Industry politics meddling with public transportation alternatives.

"Cops-R-Crooks"

On the west side of Park Street just south of the I-670 bridge were these two humorous postings. Columbus despite its strange conservative sub-urban veneer is home to some free thinking indivuals who have various methods of self publishing.
