Just Pies
by lashr1999 about Just Pies
The staff here was very friendly. The guy behind the counter stated he did not want to sell us the coffee since it was 2 hours old. However, he would give us a cup for free if we wanted. That's honesty for you, in NY if that cup of coffee was 2 DAYS old and someone wanted it. It probably would be sold. We had a tough decision choosing between all the yummy pies they had. We finally choose the strawberry fruit pie and a pecan pie. We ended up eating the strawberry pie on the lawn in from of the Just Pies lot since we had to try it! That pie was so good and fresh we finished it fast:) We couldn't wait to get home and eat the pecan pie later on. The stawberry fruit pie was my favorite. Jess loved the pecan pie.
Whetstone Park of Roses
by lashr1999
The park houses over 10000 rose and also has a daffodil garden which blooms in the spring. Mid-June and mid September are the best times to visit since this is when the roses are in full bloom. However, the roses were still quite a sight in mid August. There is an observation post which you can go upstairs to get an overview of the garden. In addition, on very hot day you can ‘accidentally’ get caught in the spray of a sprinkler or 2 or 3. The park showcases several musical events and an annual rose festival. Around this area Whetstone park has a pond, an archery range, walking trails, athletic fields and a library. You can pack a picnic lunch, borrow a book and read it in the park.
German Village
by ColumbusGuy
Beginning in the 1830's, a large number of German immigrants, fleeing starvation, persecution and war, arrived in the Columbus and settled in undevolped land about a mile south of the new Ohio statehouse.
They brought with them a a sturdy and elegant style of home construction whose main elements include brick, stone, lintels, and simple oranmentation that has great appeal today.
During the Depression, German Village fell on hard times and by the 1950's, a time when the post-war exodus to the suburbs was in full swing, it was in serious neglect.
Pioneering urbanites, some simply looking for a bargain, gradually rediscovered the neighborhood in the 1960's and began the long process of converting the run down old cottages and mansions into modern homes and businesses.
Thanks to these efforts, German Village is now one of the most appealing places to live and visit in Columbus area- and one of the most expensive places to buy a house. The brick streets and sidewalks, high density curbside construction, and the surprizing number of trees give the village a cozy and intimate feel.
On the west side of German Village, along High and Front streets, is the old brewry district where one can catch a band and try out the local varieties of beer right next to the vats where next week's brew is fermenting.
Dotted throughout the city itself are a number of good restaurants. These include the first Max and Erma's restaurant- begun in the early 1970s by village resident Barry Zacks- whose oddball sense of decor and whimsical humor set the standard for future M&E's, when the restaurant became a chain. Lindey's is the haunt of the cell phone and Lexus set. Barcelona is simply a great restaurant. Schmidt's offers old style German food- sausage and saurkraut. Thurman's and the Olde Mohawk are cheap, funky and open late. Cup O' Joe, is a good spot for coffee and desert. Katzinger's is the best deli in town.
