Travel Tips for Columbus

Tuesday night concerts at Grandview Library

by tvdandy

What a wonderful way to spend a Tuesday summer night, listening to music on the lawn of the Grandview Library. Some of the top artists in town play to more of a family crowd spread out in blankets on the lawn. The music starts at 7:30 pm to 8:30pm. So if you are here during the summer, come hang with the locals at the Grandview library. What is great about this location is that it is located right off of Grandview Ave which has many pubs and restaurants.

Come Straight to Schmidt's, you will not regret it

by Donrogelio about Schmidt's Sausage Haus and Restaurant

Authentic German food, with gracious and friendly service, is served daily at this restaurant in a historic part of Columbus. The personnel and the customers were friendly and helpful in helping us select our dishes. Since it was our first visit, the manager gave us a complementary cream puff (the house specialty) and an apple strudel to go (both were unbelievably tasty. Also, I understand, they have live music each night with oompah bands on Friday and Saturday nights. I enjoyed the sausages and kraut. My wife enjoyed the beets, German potato salad and the schnitzel.

Another Japanese option

by spartan about Genji Japanese Steak House

Similar decor and format as the Japanese Steak House (downtown) but the food is just as good and the prices are less expensive. Anything on the menu is good. I've had the beef and chicken combo as well as the beef, chicken and shrimp combo...outstanding!!!

Humongo Rose Garden - Whetstone Park of Roses

by AnitaCarrie

Columbus is home to a fantastic rose garden, open to the public. Imagine 13 acres of gardens... There is a rose festival every year, in 07 it was June 9th and 10th. The roses are in full bloom in June, but going before or after their full bloom still won't disappointed you. Parking is free, entrance is free, and it is open from dawn til dusk...

The kids love the Gila Monsters at the Zoo

by butterflykizzez04

Size: Length of 1-2 ft., weight about 3-5 lbs

.Habitat and Range: The Gila monster prefers arid and semiarid parts of north Mexico and the American Southwest. It can be found in areas that receive enough moisture to sustain a few shrubs. It avoids the heat by remaining inactive most of the time, hiding under rocks and in burrows and coming out of hiding in the twilight. During the winter, the Gila monster becomes dormant.

Physical Characteristics: Coloration is black and yellow or pink. Its body is covered with bead-like scales.

Diet and eating habits: The Gila monster’s diet consists of birds' eggs, nestlings, rodents, frogs, lizards, insects, centipedes, worms, and carrion. It swallows most prey whole but usually breaks eggs to eat the contents. The Gila monster relies on its senses of taste and smell to track down its prey. While hunting it uses its tongue to taste the scent particles that have been left on the ground. Once it detects the aroma of its prey, it will track it across the desert. The bite of the Gila monster contains poison that attacks the nervous system of its prey. The venom is not injected into its prey but rather it flows into the prey through grooves in the lizard’s teeth and then into the wound through the bite. Its venom is strong enough to kill mammals and birds.
