Dayton Bombers Hockey
by kdoc13
There is nothing like an ECHL hockey game. Especially when your local hometown team is playing one called the "Grrowwlll", or the "Cottonmouths", or the scary "Salmon Kings." What were they thinking! Cottonmouths? I want to name my team for that dry feeling in my mouth after too much alcohol which I notice before I discover my zacly breath! ECHL Hockey is a step or two below the NHL, but is a lot more fun to watch. Fights break out, scoring is high, canadian names aplenty! Plus, for fans of the movie Slap Shot, we play the Cheifs! In fact, I think someone is beating up Paul Newman in the picture.
The Nut House, as we like to call the Ervin J. Nutter Center, is a mid-size arena and there really isn't a bad seat there. Unlike the Dragon's games, these rarely sell out though. It is a shame, it is the more fun of the two, as far as putting on a show for the fans goes. Well worth the time to see a game, and not really all that expensive either. Just you, and your beer hand baby!
The Dayton Aviation Heritage Center
by kdoc13
Yes, the dayton Aviation Heritage National Park honors Orville Wright, Wilber Wright, and poet Paul Laurence Dunbar.... Yeah, the third one surprised me too. Especially since he pre-dates the planes.
It is actually 4 places which make up this national park. The Wright Bros. Stuff is at Carillon Park, Huffman Prarie (on Wright Patterson AFB), and the wright Brothers Cycle Shop. The shop is kind of neat to go to, but not in the safest of locations. The Wright Cycle Company building is located west of downtown Dayton. From I-75 take the Third Street exit and head west. Say a hail mary! Turn left on Williams Street. The park is immediately on your left.
The Paul Lawrence Dunbar stuff is in the same neighborhood. They call the area the Wright Dunbar district. Again, not afe at night. Get directions to the PLD and Huffman Prarie stuff at the web page below.
Jay's Seafood.
by kdoc13 about Jay's Seafood.
I am not good with seafood. I just don't like it. But even the smell of the food at Jay's is enough to make me crave it. This is probably the best seafood you will find in the midwest, period! Plus, Jay's has the best wine list of anyplace I have been to outside of New York or Chicago. The interior of the place is exactly as it looks in the picture. The place is just nice. And it is well worth the extra money if you are trying to show your girlfriend a good time. But, dress nice (suit and tie) or you are going to be out of place, and probably out of luck getting in. Ok, not being a seafood fan (strange allergies) my favorite item is actually the Prok Tenderloin. It is served with a type of french sauce which just melts in your mouth, and a goat cheese potato cake. Yum! Plus you have not lived until you have had their Bourbon Pecan Pie.
There is an Air Force Base...
by John195123
There is an Air Force Base here, I forgot the name, Patterson AFB maybe? Anyway, it is pretty neat, with a bunch of old US planes, as well as some modern ones. Dayton, Ohio is where aviation was born, starting with the Wright Brothers back in the very early 1900s.
