Travel Tips for Marietta

LOCKMASTER'S HOUSE

by LoriPori

Located at 243 Front Street, the LOCKMASTER'S HOUSE was the home of the Lockmaster for Marietta and Muskingum Valley towns from the 1840's to the 1940's.
A sign at the front of the house reads:
"Built in 1899 to service adjacent locks which replaced those of 1840's on Harmar Side. Locks and dam removed 1968. Muskingum was first canalized US river."

MARIETTA HARBOR CONCESSION STAND

by LoriPori

OK - where to put this tip! The MARIETTA HARBOR CONCESSION STAND is not really a restaurant and not really for shopping. But I do think it is a local tradition or local custom to come here. It's near the walking trails, near the walkway to Harmar Village and it has great views of the Muskingum River.
The concession stand located at 1 Butler Street, offers cold drinks - ice - hand dipped ice cream - hot dogs - snacks. And it also includes the Harbor Gift Shop.
It was closed when we were there on Tuesday, October 19.

Marietta, Ohio

by Stephen-KarenConn

General Rufus Putnam and 48 pioneers landed here April 7, 1788. Within three months they had surveryed land, laid out the streets, and inaugurated a government. It was the first settlement in America's newly designated Northwest Territories. At the time the area consisted of what is today all of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota.

Many centuries earlier the area had been inhabited by Moundbuilders, both from the Adena culture, 800 BC - 100 AD, and the Hopewell, 100 BC - 500 AD.

Marietta flourished as a port during the riverboat era, and still retains much of the charm of and interest of it's historic past.

LORIPORI'S IMAGES OF MARIETTA

"WASHINGTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE"

Located at 205 Putnam Street (corner of Second and Putnam) is WASHINGTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE. The ornate clock and bell tower rises to 158 feet. The McShane Bell, weighing about 3000 pounds, was hung in the tower in 1903. The column-lined balconies that face both Putnam and Second streets were typical of public buildings built in the early 1900's.
The courthouse contains several memorials to local servicemen and women, including photographs of county veterans who lost their lives in World War I, Korea and Vietnam. A Word War II mural on the second floor memorializes the sacrifices of local veterans in that war. Also on the second floor is the County Recorder's Office containing land records dating to the founding of Marietta.
