The estuary of the Maumee River from Lake Erie to Grand Rapids, OH is the most scenic and varied site. We are relatively new to Toledo, but find it a most delightful town. It's not New York or Chicago, but it is a most livable city. Ironically, most of the locals look down their nose at the place - the grass always seems greener. Those of us who have moved here have found the grass very green, indeed.

Don't waste your time going to Toledo. Have some fun.
Go to Lawrence Kansas and watch the prairie grass grow.
If you are willing to walk a little bit, Toledo has several interesting neighborhoods close to design that offer a wide variety of 19th century building types. These areas aren't particularly gentrified - there is a real mix of social and economic classes living in them. Toeldo isn't a "pretty place" - just a honest one.
Recently the Toledo Public Library opened a new building directly behind their depression-era headquarters. Linking the two buidlings is this striking and dramatic atrium. It seems like a great place to curl up with a good book.
The University of Toledo Center for the Visual Arts is immediately adjacent to the Toledo Art Museum. You could this as a test run for Gehry's masterpiece, the Guggenheim in Bilbao. Compare this to his design, also from the mid-90s, for the University of Minnesota Art Museum - I have a picture of it on my Minneapolis page.
