Historic Ohio Barns
by tspeegle09
I recommend driving West on Route 250 for about 10-20 miles on a sunny day, stopping periodically to take photos of the rolling landscape and beautiful barns and farmhouses. On Route 250, heading west towards Ashland County, you will find both an Ohio Bicentennial Barn and a Mail Pouch Tobacco Barn, each less than 20 miles outside of the city. If you continue south of Route 250 for about 3 miles once you hit Ashland, you'll find a different Ohio Bicentennial Barn to enjoy at 974 County Road 1600. Take advantage of the local history and scenery!
This is a good thing to do on your way to Mohican State Park. ;-)
Lehman's Old Fashioned Hardware Auction
by tspeegle09
Lehman's Old Fashioned Hardware was established in 1955 and has grown to serve Wayne County's large Amish community. They sell a variety of non-electric hardware items, hand-cranked housewares, oil lamps, recycled goods, USA-made tools and toys, and retro appliances. Since they cater to the Amish, much of Lehman's stock looks as if it was made in the 19th century, and as a result the store has provided props for period Hollywood films such as "Cold Mountain" and "Gangs of New York." Lehman's also bottles its own brand of old-fashioned sodas, including root beer and cream soda.
On THURSDAYS, Lehman's often hosts livestock auctions for the Amish community. The auction site is packed with Old Order and Swartzentruber Amish, as well as more modern Amish sects. During the auction, the Amish also hold a flea market where they sell homemade crafts and baked goods. This is a great photo AND shopping opportunity. Check the Lehman's website for details.
