ROUTE 66 : Tip 37 - no Heartbreak hotel
When we travelled route 66, we were lucky enough to meet the ex-deputy CEO of all of Best Western. Now living in semi-retirement, he took the time to give us a personal tour of the hotel where his career began and where he ended it as the owner. The Hotel's claim to fame is that it was used by the King himself, Elvis.
"This is the actual room then?"
"The very same, in those days they just got a standard room, he was fairly famous by then, but still learning his trade"
"The Furniture is not original then ?
"Well no, its been re-fitted many times since. The style and dimensions of the bed are however what they would have been in those days"
"Do you actually remember him ?"
"Hell, yes and what I remember him most clearly for was his good manners and friendliness. I can still picture him out the back of the hotel shooting a few hoops with some local lads from the town."
"Amazing stuff"
"Would you like to see the other themed rooms ?"
" We don't want to take up any more of your time, we want to push on a little, thanks for the tour"
We must have spent an hour with the man. Laden with fruit, personal business cards from him and an in-depth knowledge of the workings of the Best Western empire we were off.
