Travel Tips for Oklahoma City

It's Ice Cream, You Dig?

by mrclay2000

Listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, Kaiser's Ice Cream has been selling shakes and confections since its construction here in 1919. The building itself is no gem, nor does it command a majestic prominence, but as its original proprietor Anthony J. Kaiser would probably tell you, it's the product that keeps customers coming back.

The Milk Bottle

by mrclay2000

This interesting little outlet has been an Oklahoma City fixture since the 1930s. Variously owned by the many dairies that operate here, the outlet is now known as the Saigon Baguette, lying in the heart of the Vietnamese community in town. Though you might get your handful of snacks inside or just a milk or soda, the milk bottle above once drew customers daily from blocks away at a time when "refrigeration" meant communion with a block of ice. Family legend holds that the milk bottle and outlet (sitting in the median of Classen Boulevard) was the brainchild of my paternal grandfather, who also painted the first dairy name on its exterior.

A great BBQ sandwich

by rexvaughan about Pappy's

This little place is nothing fancy but has wonderful ‘pulled pork’ barbeque. If you are not familiar with ‘pulled pork’ it is very tender chopped pork, sometimes just pulled apart as it is so tender. Pappy’s is a funky little place with a simple menu and colorful ambience. Our sandwiches were served on a paper mat on a cafeteria tray but all very neat, clean and delicious. We had the pork sandwich which was very good. It is served with no sauce so that you can choose your own - mild, hot or sweet, with very good coleslaw and potato chips. As good a BBQ sandwich as you are likely to find. They also do take out.

The Guardian

by rexvaughan

Topping the new dome on the state capitol is a sculpture of a Native American, called "The Guardian." It was done by an excellent Native American artist, Enoch Kelly Haney who is of Seminole and Creek descent and whose family came to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears. He is also a member of the Oklahoma legislature. It symbolizes the perseverance and steadfastness of the people of Oklahoma in guarding their heritage. Inside the capitol is this miniature which stands about 7 feet tall.

Mid-Continent Life Building

by mrclay2000

Built in the 1920s and since listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this handsome building on Classen seems as stately as one of our government offices, but it has been a private venture since construction, and bares a close copy to the Daily Oklahoma building. Its classical revival lines are not always easy to review even when standing in front of its portico, since this building is tightly shouldered with tall trees that, though deciduous, still block an open view to one of downtown's more stately structures.
