Travel Tips for Oklahoma City

Bricktown Baseball

by kenmerk

Well, one way to occupy an evening in OK city is to catch a base ball game down at bricktown...

They have a pretty nice minor league stadium down there. The night I went there was a college game between Oklahoma St and Univ of Oklahoma, so this obviously generated a bit of local interest. (Large masses of people decorated in orange and purple milling about...)

Tho' sitting thru the game would have been ok, fate would have it that it started to pour just before the game started.. So rather than watch a game in which I really didnt have any interest, we instead wandered down to one of the many local pubs in the area and got tanked up instead... (all for the better, I'd say...)

State Capitol Building - Facts and Figures

by mrclay2000

About 2.5 miles from central downtown is the Oklahoma Capitol Building on Lincoln Boulevard, constructed in 1917 (without the dome) of Indiana limestone, the same material used in the McFarlin Memorial Methodist Church. On its front lawn is a tall elm planted in 1932, the grandson of the elm under which George Washington took command of the Continental forces on July 3, 1775 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The seeds of the grand elm were collected by members of the D.A.R., and planted on the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth.

Time for an Ice Cream Break?

by rexvaughan about Braum's

Braum's is probably the best ice cream you can find in this part of the country. They have numerous locations in Oklahoma and surrounding states, but so far have refused to expand further. They say that they will not put a store more than a day's drive from the source. At any rate, they have dozens of flavors of ice cream, yogurt and light ice cream. One of my favorites is cherry amaretto. An ideal spot for a ice cream snack! They have other foods including an acceptable hamburger and a pretty good breakfast menu. Their french fries are mediocre.

Myriad Gardens

by Edgeon

The Myriad Gardens in downtown Oklahoma is one a true treasure of the state. Inside a plexiglass cylinder known as the 'crystal bridge,' the Myriad gardens is the largest greenhouse in the midwest.

One end of it is devoted to rainforest plants, replete with irises, towering trees and a water fall and the other end has desert plants, spiky ferns and cacti. In between is a Koi pond, palm fronds, an African hut, live butterflies and a tiny aquarium with South American fish and reptiles.

A nice place to take a date.

Capitol Donation

by mrclay2000

In 1910, Mr. Harn donated 40 acres of his 160-acre homestead for the State Capitol Building project. By this time, Mr. Harn had turned from the law practice to pursue oil and railroad interests. You can see the dome of the Capitol Building on the right edge of this photo, just seven blocks north of its benefactor's original residence.
