Travel Tips for Oklahoma City

by Triple_D

A true gem of OKC that many tourists don't see is the city Zoo and Omniplex. They are located across the street from each other and both offer several hours of entertainment. When the weather permits (and if you love animals), go to the Zoo. Most people don't realize that the OKC Zoo is one of the top zoos in the US. I've probably been to 50 zoos all over the world (including the over-hyped San Diege Zoo) and OKC still ranks in the top 3. Many animal lovers hate zoos because of the inhumane way that the animals are forced to live - and that's where the OKC Zoo sets itself apart. Most of the habitats are open and manicured to resemble a natural setting for the animal but still afford great intimacy for the viewing public. For only $6, it's well worth the trip!

Many cool places. The County Line has great family style BBQ, the Nomad II has a great 'fried pepperoni pizza'(not on the menu), Chelino's is good for home-cooked Mexican (S. Robinson location only, though), Flip's is a great Italian wine bar & trattorea, and you can't swing a dead cat in the 'little Korea/Taiwan/VietNam/China district' (N.23 & Penn) without hitting an 'authentic' Asian buffet.

Natl Cowboy Hall of Fame & Western Heritage Center

by rexvaughan

This is a wonderful museum dedicated to cowboys and Indians. Seriously, it has marvelous displays of Native American Art and Heritage as well as all aspects of life in the old West. There are artworks by many famous artists such as Frederic Remington as well as lesser known western and Native American artists. Oklahoma has more resident Native Americans than any other state and has in the past couple of decades appropriated this heritage. It is great to see the contributions of these great people recognized and celebrated. There is an extensive permanent collection and frequent exhibitions but of all the works there I think the one in the photo is the piece de resistance. It is "End of the Trail" by James Earle Fraser. Its size and poignance is very impressive and moving and the title says much about the man, the horse and the people as a whole. Fraser incidentally is the man who designed the buffalo on the old US Buffalo nickle (a no longer minted 5 cent piece if you are not familiar with American coinage).
Probably the signature piece outside is an enlargement of Frederic Remington's 'Coming Through the Rye,' one of his more famous sculptures. The museum has been enlarged in recent years and has an amazing amount of wonderful art in the permanent collection as well as great exhibits.

Becoming Redemption

On the other hand, there are some windows with Biblical depictions that have that etched effect so vital to real stained glass. Emblems and icons can be found aplenty in the drab interior of the "old" (i.e. rebuilt) sanctuary, but there is a grand and profound charm in the representation of the Christ shepherding his flock.

stormy oklahoma

by bryINpoland

yes i have been to "ok-city" . i only stayed for 2 days and 2 nights but saw what i came to see.

it was stormy weather when i was there, but i heard it is always like that in oklahoma so i guess it was another beautiful day.

i stopped through oklahoma on a cross country trip i did in 01. the reason i wanted to stop in "ok city" was to see the memorial for the federal building bombing. i had heard about what a great memorial it was and had to check it out.

i recommend anyone going to the memorial to put aside a few hours. theres a wonderful museum at the site that u need a lot of time to work your way through. the museum was put together so well and takes u through the time line of how everything happen.the reflections pool and the chairs representing every victim were great ideas and it looks so beautiful at night. i wish i had more then just this one pic to show u but my other pics are in atlanta and u know i am in poland so hopefully i will add those pictures soon.

if u ever go through oklohoma, take the time to stop by the memorial. ofcourse it can be a touching experience so bring some tissues.
