Travel Tips for Oklahoma City

EDMOND'S site was originally...

by Routeman

EDMOND'S site was originally explored by Washington Irving in 1832 and described in his publication, ' A tour on the prairies. ' So began a tradition that lives to this day of a driving desire to be first, a desire for excellence.

State Capitol Building - Oklahoma Heritage

by mrclay2000

Several large paintings in the upper galleries depict Oklahoma statesmen and personalities, including Will Rogers, Jim Thorpe and Sequoyah, the Cherokee syllabrist. Higher still on the walls are even larger murals depicting 450 years of Oklahoma History, starting from the time when Coronado first stepped first in what would become "Oklahoma," a Choctaw word meaning "land of the red man." Though our Spanish heritage has much dissipated, Spain was the first European power to mingle with the Native Americans here.

Great muffins and more

by rexvaughan about Cafe do Brasil

This little place is unimposing but a very good stop for breakfast or lunch. We had lunch here and found the food and service excellent. Their sandwiches and salads are fresh and flavorful and they bake a wide variety of cakes and muffins for dessert. I want to go back and try their very interesting looking breakfast menu and some other lunch items like Brasilian Pie and Brasilian Muffaleta. They are only open for breakfast and lunch (7:00-15:00) Mon-Sat.

The Oklahoma City National Memorial

by basstbn

April 19, 1995: Anarchist and white-supremicist Timothy McVeigh parks a rental truck loaded with explosives in front of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. At 9:02 a.m., a massive explosion rips the face off of the entire north side of the building. 168 people die, including 19 children. An additional 30 children became orphans, and 219 children lost at least one parent. Over 300 buildings were damaged or destroyed.

The site is now a national memorial. You can not help but be touched with emotion while visiting these grounds, and be constantly reminded of the futility and senselessness of violence..

Please take a moment to look at additional photographs in my travelogue.

State Capitol Building - Under the Dome

by mrclay2000

When completed in 1917, the state capitol building project ran out of funds before a dome could cap the new structure. This feature being absent made the Oklahoma capitol building more unique, as one of perhaps a dozen that did not support a dome. Once the new dome was constructed in 2001-2 at a cost of over $20 million, I was appalled at the expense and new addition, thinking our beloved state capitol was no longer unique, but rather a larger version of the one in Salt Lake City. I held this view for months, until the dome made the hitherto subdued capitol more visible from countless viewpoints around the city.
