Travel Tips for Oklahoma City

Indian Heritage and Celebration

by mrclay2000

Oklahoma has more Native Americans than any other state in the country. Every spring, representatives from over 100 tribes participate in the annual Red Earth Festival at the state fairgrounds, bringing with them their skill and talent, their artwork, their tradition, in many cases their own language, but in every venue, you'll discover the rich history and culture that still beats proudly in Native Americans everywhere.

The Golden Dome

by mrclay2000

This golden domed building has stood in this location for decades. Considered ultra-modern at the time, it is now the subject of controversy, since locals and others familiar with the structure wish to preserve it as a historic landmark, while developers want to tear it down and put up something new. To my mind, the building is a modern eyesore, worthy of historical status due to its age in the same vein as the nearby pavements or telephone poles (which could easily claim the same seniority). Whichever side ultimately wins this battle, this controversial dome lies in the same visual sphere as the two churches listed on the last tips.

Fresh and delicious

by rexvaughan about Cafe 501, Edmond

Cafe 501’s cuisine has been called Californian. I don’t know if that is accurate but it is delicious. We went for lunch with some family members and were all very impressed with the ambience, the service and of course the food. I would love to go back for a ‘pastry break’ as they have a case loaded with wonderful looking cakes, cookies and pastries of all kinds. Their bread is made on premises and is wonderful. I had a pear salad with fresh spinach and sugared pecans which was fresh, crispy and delicious. My wife had chicken salad which she loved. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to sample the desserts - next time!

National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

by basstbn

One of OKC's highlights, a terrific destination in itself, and a celebration of life on the rugged frontier. Historical exhibits include cowboy and rodeo galleries, a recreated western town, an entertaining look at cowboys in movies and on television, weaponry, and more. The galleries of contemporary and classic Western Art are exceptional.

For a better look, see my travelogues (coming very soon).

Oklahoma City University

by mrclay2000

Celebrating its 100th year in 2003, the Oklahoma City University campus houses one of three law schools in the state and one of the best fine arts colleges in mid-America. The entire campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, though many of its various buildings are strictly functional. The administration building and the memorial library however are pure Gothic and wonderful additions to the campus. For those who like ballet, the Oklahoma City Ballet performs here (its home) throughout the season, and the performances are always first class.
